Very rare vintage sport bike in great running condition.
This was Yamaha's first 600cc "race style" street bike.

1986 Yamaha FZ 600 Pure Sports
    2600 original miles
Air cooled 600cc motor/6 speed transmission
    All stock, all factory fairings
    Stored from 1988-2015

    Recent work:
    Carburetors ultrasonically cleaned
    New rubber intake manifolds
New air filter, spark plugs, oil/filter
    New battery
New fuel valve (clean tank, no rust)
    Rebuilt brake calipers

Runs and shifts well. Drove it around this weekend
All electronics work (lights, gauges, horn)
Not perfect cosmetically, minor crack in left upper fairing and chipped stickers
Looks great for 32 years old!

    Clean title in hand
Located in Alexandria, VA (Washington DC suburb)
    Asking $3800

I can take more pics, these are the only ones I have on my phone right now.

I raced a 90 and 91 FZR in the mid 90s. Was living with " no fear" if you remember that saying

One of my favorite bikes. I quit riding when I had kids. I had a gray market FZR 400 for a while.

What a Blast from the past! I was 16 at that time and had a Gix’r 1100. That was a right when the arms race in Crotch Rockets began. It was a great time to be a kid coming of age.

Thanks for the reminder of polo cologne, big hair, testerossas, Ferris bueller, roxy music and “the art of the deal”!

    Cheers

Kewl looking bike. I think I remember a few on the street. During 1990, I walked into a Kawasaki dealer and purchased a ZX-7. I had never been on a motorcycle in my life. I rode around at night with a group of similar bikes - Gixxers, ZX-11, and Hurricaine's etc... GLWS.

Friend bought one new and I bought an RG500 (Suzuki) at the same time. We still laugh at how uncomfortable the FZ seat was..."like sitting on the end of an ironing board". Cool bike! That's the same motor they put in the Radian.

I sent the photo on to my Yamaha guru in Austin.

He is busy with a $30K fence around his yard on South Congress to keep the homeless out of his living room.
But he said he just added lighting to the columns..

    I bet this is cheaper!!

He has his similar vintage, but smashed FJ1200 in the corner.
It cut his left thumb off.....

Not trying to interfere, but is it rare because of its age and great condition or was it rare when new?

    It's rare in that it's a survivor first-generation 600cc sport bike.
Not sure exactly how many were produced but I can't find another one for sale in the USA.

WOW that brings back memories. Did a track day on one of these at Shannonville in Ont. back in the 80s. Binned it going into the hairpin, locked the front up...woops!!!

    Looks great. GLWS.

Your bike was very rare "back in the day" because it had to compete with much more competent/extreme machinery. It wasn't cheap either....I don't have figures available but Yamaha didnt sell a lot of this model, hence its rarity. At the same time that your bike was new, there was Suzuki's RG500, GSXR 750/1000, Kawasaki Ninjas and even Yamahas own RZ 500. These were all much more focused sport bikes and liqued cooled. You have a rare bike....your bike also had a 400cc version.
