I have this weird rattle, that sounds like a playing card hitting the spokes on a wheel...??!? It only occurs when the car is warm and after the car has been stopped/parked with ignition off... When pulling off again, the sound accelerate as the car is speeding up, and then disappear after 3-5 min of driving..?
Second the CV joints/axles. Also the wheel bearings on these cars are notoriously terrible, jack the car up so the wheel is off the ground and wiggle it around the circumference of the wheel. If there is play, your bearing may be going out.
Red- still cannot believe on a bespoke supercar they did not install sealed bearing wheel hubs… my 99 m3 has sealed wheel hubs…
I had both rear wheel bearings replaced a month ago, so those should be ruled out, but I will check the whell bolts and the CV joints... Funny part is, that there are absolute no rattle/ticking from first take off... It occurs after the car has been stopped and say, been standing for maybe 30 min.?
what type exhaust do you have? if noise is after warmup I doubt it is a wheel bearing or U-joint issue
I have standard manifolds and a CS Exhaust/End pipes The car has just been through a major service and both rear wheel bearings where replaced.
Bad wheel bearings make a scraping sound and bad U-joints make a tinging sound Don't think your problem is either of those from sound you defined I think you have something developing in your exhaust system that acts up after being heated. Could be a header leaking or something in the exhaust chain.
I have had that thought myself... The ticking/rattle sound accelerate simultanious with the car in motion, and stays on for only a couple of minutes..
So when car is cold start it w/o driving open rear hatch and listen. Let it heat up and the shut off while listening to what is happening in the rear Have someone then start the car and you listen from rear You have to isolate it Other possibility is a belt or belt tensioner. So don't discard that idea either
next thought was a T/O bearing which it could be except for the "right side" statement which is odd Suggest you take car to your shop. leave overnight and have car put on lift. In AM try to duplicate on the lift what's happening to locate and ID the sound
So... I found the source to the ticking sound...! Right side cone shaped heat shield, that protects the inner CV rubber boot, was stucked between the lover lip of the cathalyst... So, when the exhaust system gets hot, it expands and pushes the heatshield so the Hexbolts touch the structure that bolts on to the gearbox. When driving very slow, it sounds like a playing card hitting the spokes on a bicycle, but as speed increase it gets static.. put my car on the lift, i managed to bend the lip on the cathalyst, and shorten the shield with half a inch, just to make clearence between the exhaust and shield, also between the shield and the CV joint... way to go finding these noises can drive one crazy good going at least it was not a critical component problem
Thank you guys... It must have happend when the shop reinstalled the gearbox after changing the clutch etc. one month ago...?!?
I had one shield damage the boot inself and required replacement. Easy afternoon job if one needs to.
