loss of hp is more than likely one of the ECU's. and the rattling noise is probably the flywheel, it needs to be re packed with kluber grease.
the ecu is in this pic and located behind the rear shock tower.

your car has 2 ecu's 1 behind each rear shock tower. take out the 2 screws that hold it in and swap them. that is if your 1/4 or 5/8 slow down light comes on. if the lights come on THEN swap the ecu's . if the ecu is bad it will move from 1/4 to 5/8 or vise versa. they run about 400 us dollars and are very simple to replace. i was taught by the best, ernie and miltonian !!.

when my ecu went bad, my slow down light would come on. but after a while the slow down light didnt come on anymore. you may be able to test them with a meter. or you can see if the car is throwing a code or not.

I have a '94 348GTS and I had a SLOW DOWN 5-8 warning and loss of 4 cylinders on nearly every trip. The main dealer replaced the ECU and a thermocouple and the problem is solved. Now I get a very occasional loss of 4 cylinders without the SLOW DOWN light. (Sometimes - very very occasionally, the SLOW DOWN 1-4 does flicker slightly). It also goes away after a restart or sometimes on its own. If I'm on the motorway I just turn the ignition of and on again and let the clutch come to do a rolling start. This also has the same effect.

The main dealer has said if I can live with it and it's very occasional I shouldn't let it worry me too much. They're a very friendly dealer and are definitely not out to make a fast buck! The car has a sports exhaust (which I'm trying to swap for standard) and he said that the different temperatures sometimes confuse the engine monitoring causing a 4 cylinder shut down without the light.

He also pointed out the main problem with the ECU's being the green potting compound which doesn't stick to the black plastic housing. This allows a small separation over time to occur which allows moisture (and corrosion) into the ECU. Thus over the years most ECU's will go bad sometime.

At the moment I'm just hoping the shut down will not occur during overtaking on a mountain pass with a road train coming the other way!

There was a revision in the ECU's to provide a new silicone seal. The old seal, exactly as described above, does seem to crack over time and allow moisture. 179278 is the current part number.

That's interesting info - my 5-8 ECU was replaced in March this year with the original F142581 by the main dealer (see also http://ricambiamerica.com/product_info.php?cPath=13&products_id=261104&osCsid=ab8c8ad1ae1dd591b905ae457ccfb84b)

Is the 179278 a replacement for the 142581? (note that the GTS has the 2.7 Motronic)

    They're flipping expensive anyway!

Is yours a Swiss car, or regular Euro? I stand corrected on prior post; 142581 is current rev level for a 348. I had given 355 numbers before.

when I start teh engine...engine sounds like a bucket of old bolts but starts beautifully...and yest I just had a clutch witht he flywheel well and properly greased....when I shut down...the car sound like a old tractor or truck rattling..but everything else is running nice so I just live with it

I am thinking you folks may be also having a intermittent connection of the ECU's. Might be prudent to take apart all the connectors and clean them really good with some aerosol electrical contact cleaner, then treat with Stabilant 22. Probably best to do this on every connector in the engine compartment.
