I just bought a F430 Spyder, and love it! but has anyone ever experience a rattling noise that sounds like its coming from behind the driver head. It sounds like a loose trim piece or something, but i cannot track it down. It is more noticeable on rough / bumpy roads.

Also, the owner's manual says that once you start the process of opening / closing the convertible top, that you should complete the process and the guy i bought it from also said not to stop the process, but i'm so tempted to keep the cove open, so i see if there is anything loose back there.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I would agree, the 430 doesn't seem to be "happy" interrupting the convertible top opening or closing process, but I've had to do it to troubleshoot closing issues (worn elastic bands) without any ill effects being observed. I suspect the ECU is looking for confirmation that the cycle has been completed and it will give an alert on the instrument cluster if the cycle doesn't finish. I am having the elastic bands replaced next week though and plan to mention it to the installer, but I suspect he'll need to interrupt the roof cycle maybe a few times to complete the elastic band replacement.

difficult to trace spider vibrations, I had one last year that I was convinced was coming from my middle dash hence took out all air vents, until I realised it only happened with the hood up and eventually traced it to a lose header rail

I spent the first few years of having my 430 chasing rattles, after 11 years of ownership I’ve given up now, lol. There is a very distinct rattle that appears at around 3000ish revs, I chased it for a while and it turned out that it was a characteristic of the engine, it Sounds to me like a bit of timing chain chatter as the variable timing shifts, it might not be that but there is a noise as it does it. Other areas that rattle, the side engine covers, heat shields over the cats, covers over the drive shafts. Happy hunting :)

Ah! Good to know about the timing chain chatter sound. I was also curious about that sound.
