I have noticed that on start up when cold the is sound like a rock lightly bouncing around, after 2-3 minutes the sounds goes away. I know it is not the clutch as this is distinctly in the front. Any suggestions, water pump, idler bearings?

I have been planning a major... maybe sooner than later now...

Yep, it's time. Bearing noise? Water pump? Hopefully, just an alternator bearing, but should be immediately isolated, identified, and dealt with at risk of great expense.

It's at least possible that it's just a glazed spot on the alternator belt or the A/C belt. A simple test is to spray a little water down there in the area of the front of the engine, while you are hearing the noise. You don't have to really douse it, you can even soak a shop rag with water and just squeeze it over the belt area, between the engine and the firewall. The noise will temporarily stop right away if it's just a belt, but it will come back again. If there is a problem with the water pump, or the idler/tensioner bearings, this will have no effect on the noise.

Personally, I would think that if you had a problem with the water pump or the bearings, the noise would NOT go away as the engine warmed up. It should be taken seriously until you pinpoint the cause.

Could also be oil pump bearings. I would stop driving, and start diagnosing.

What year is your car? What is the assembly number/VIN (last 5 digits) ?

    Similar cam belt tensioners, though.

Actually they are completely different. The bearings are similar in concept but tensioners are very different.

If your car is an early 348, the cam belt drive shaft bearings could be the problem. There is an update.
