Just got my 2017 488 Silver and out of warranty 2 weeks ago. So need the Ferrari community help. I hear 2 rattling noises. I hear a rattling sound, when I open and close the engine compartment - it's possible sound is from the ventilation grates, but not sure. The 2nd rattling noise is somewhere behind the passenger seat while driving at low to medium speeds. Has anyone experience this and fixed? Thank you all.
Sorry, no experience with any of your rattles. I do have a dash rattle that comes and goes. Good luck.
Very hard to say what is causing your particular noise, without inspecting the car first hand. However, I will tell you this: On my 2018 488, I had the exact same situation as you are describing. There was a rattling noise coming from behind the passenger seat area, which only occurred during low to medium speeds. At first, I thought something was wrong with the right side turbo. However, after driving the car for a few days, the noise suddenly vanished. A day or two later, I was driving near a concrete wall and I heard a clicking noise. When I got home, I discovered there was a Ferrari style black Torx screw stuck in the rear tire. So... my best guess as to what happened is that the rattling noise I was wearing was caused by a loose screw that someone dropped back in the engine compartment during assembly. Whoever dropped it on the assembly line must have not bothered to retrieve it, so it bounced around back there (causing an annoying rattling noise), until it finally bounced out and ended up being run over by the rear tire. If you've ever taken apart any area of your Ferrari, you can usually quickly see how the cars appear to have been rushed on the assembly line and not always probably put together. My 458 and also my 488 had a number of areas were it was very apparent that people at the factory weren't able to get certain harnesses properly attached and just left them hanging and/or didn't get some bolts correctly started and just powered them into the hole, resulting in cross threading, etc. Pretty sloppy for a $300K car in my opinion, but I think lately Ferrari has been turning out cars so fast that people on the assembly line maybe just don't have time to do their jobs 100% all the time. Also, if you look at how much of a car like the 458 or 488 is designed, it's just all over the place in a lot of areas. It's not exactly like the car has been designed with ease of assembly in mind. If you contrast it with something like a Toyota or some of the Datsuns from the 70's for example, you can see where the Japanese design in specific things which help to make assembly of their cars easier and more straightforward. With Ferraris, not so much. So my guess is that you have a dropped screw or something rattling around back there, as I did. Again, without seeing it first hand, it's hard to say for sure. If you can pinpoint where the rattle is coming from, you might take a magnet or something and run it around back there. The other thing is check the body panels back behind the passenger seat area, where they sort of wrap around. Those areas are insanely hard to secure down and sometimes the plastic snap-in thing gets crushed (instead of going into the hole in the body) and this causes the leather part to not be totally secured. You might want to see if there is a panel or strip back there which isn't attached all the way. Also, as I remember on the 488, there is a funky plastic part on the seat belts, which snaps on and off. You might check that. On my car, as soon as I got it home, I took those crazy things off and threw them into a box of spare parts. The other thing is take a strong bar magnet and run it all around the under panels and see if you can drag out a lost screw that might be on the under panel vibrating around under there. Anyway, just some ideas. Good luck! Ray
On my 488 spider, imhad this. Took about a year for them to figure out. It only occured when top down. It ended up being that the top needed to be adjusted
