I bought the book "Go Like Hell" by A.J. Baime on Friday after work. I finished it exactly 24 hours later, I literally could not put it down! For those unfamiliar with the title, the book is about the famous Ferrari Ford Duel in the 1960's culminating in Ford's Le Mans victory in 1966. Beyond that, the book gives a wonderful account of the history of Ferrari and Ford and gives some incredible insight into Enzo Ferrari. It makes me proud to be an owner of one his automobiles.

This is one of my favorite passages:

"For [Enzo Ferrari], the internal-combustion engine was a symbol of life....He spoke of automobiles as if they were animate. Cars possessed unique behaviors. They breathed through carburetors, they were skinned with metal. 'Ferrari's aim.' he once told a reporter, addressing himself in the third person, 'is to perfect an ideal, to transform inert raw material into a living machine.' The engine of a car was both heart and soul. Ferrari engineer Luigi Bazzi had called its rumble 'the heartbeat of a creature.'" p.20

I just finished it last week. It was a good read, not what would be considered a scholarly history, but a lot of fun. Recommended.

One of Smart Money's "5 Smart Books": http://www.smartmoney.com/spending/deals/5-smart-books-our-latest-staff-picks/?page=all

"Seductive curves. 220-mph straightaways. High-octane egos. Italian mistresses. And an ever-rising body count. Such was the world of elite auto racing in the mid-1960s, when upstart American cars made the first serious challenge to European engineering dominance.

In "Go Like Hell," A.J. Baime vividly depicts the sport’s golden age, taking readers inside the high-stakes racing-pit drama played out by automotive legends like rising Detroit star Lee Iacocca, renegade Texas car maker Carroll Shelby and nerves-of-steel drivers John Surtees, Phil Hill and Ken Miles.

Not to mention the big dogs. On one side: Henry Ford II, the auto-empire scion nursing a business grudge and trying to burnish his company’s sagging brand with a dollop of racing glory. On the other side: Enzo Ferrari, the auto world’s sultan of speed, whose throaty vixens had dominated the winner’s circle for decades, but whose supremacy was imperiled by Ford’s multimillion-dollar racing program. The proving ground? The 24 Hours of Le Mans, this world’s most prestigious — and lethal — endurance race.

Based on extensive interviews with all the major players, "Go Like Hell" offers insider gossip and gobs of grease-monkey detail, wrapped in a high-speed narrative you don’t have to be a gearhead to enjoy."

Thanks for the tip, I am going to get that book. I like the quote by Luigi about "the heartbeat of a creature"

It's an entertaining read but fairly superficial and has plenty of factual errors (e.g. Marco Andretti is Mario's "third son". Michael will be surprised!)
