I borrowed my wife family's E240 with panoramic roof. It is quite a nice sedan but the steering is DEAD! I don't know whether the car is going straight or turning, there is not feel at all! Good car for 60 yrs old couple but not my taste thank you.

Ergonomics is ok, but the command thing is a joke. Too many buttons that distracts me. Use the steering wheel buttons.

To make the matters worse this morning the BRAKES FAILED COMPLETELY. I was about to go to the church when the car suddenly lost its brakes. I was rolling down my driveway an 5km/h without any brakes. THAT WAS REALLY SCARY! The car wouldn't even shift to reverse. The computer said "Brakes fail, pls stop the car immediately". Yeah, right... HOW?

Some smart genius engineers at MBZ thinks that they need to interfere the hydraulic brakes by letting a computer stands between my foot and the brake discs. How nice!!!

It turns out that the car already has a computer module changed at around 2,000km. Today it has 4300+ km on the odo.

I would'nt even touch it with a 10ft pole from now on. That brake failure thing REALLY SCARED ME. What if that happen when I'm drivng 120?

    Man that was scary.

Glad to hear you didn't get hurt.

With the continued addition of electrickery, there will continue to be a higher susceptibility to bigger and more complicated problems and accidents.

Interestingly, I recently rallied a benz 280SE - the car was absolutely flawless and even at triple digit speeds it felt solid as a rock and super-reassuring. Try saying that about any of the new cars with steering as responsive as a sopping wet towel.

The E's were recalled for brake failure, no? Was your family's car not taken in?

The car was in the dealer for a three weeks this May due to computer malfunction. IIRC the module that control the brakes was changed.

The car now has 3 malfunctions:

    1. Battery convenience blah blah blah disconnected.
    2. STOP! Brake Malfunction, please stop the car immediately.
    3. ESP malfunction.

BTW the car just turned 1 year old and 4,300 km.

I have huge respect for E55 owners, imagine having that problem on the autobahn at 250km/h.

I am turning my CLK 55 in on 9/1. I've had it with that car.

I have a box. The box contains parts that fell off the car since June. My Acura TL doesn't command nearly as much respect from onlookers, but all the parts are still attached and it's a better driving car.

    Since last month:

    1) Battery died for no good reason
    2) Inside vanity mirror fell off and onto my fiancee's lap
    3) Front trim piece below the grille just fell off

For the money, forget MBZ. I know I'm not the only one who has experienced these issues. I could have pretty much bought anything up to and below an S55 but chose a TL (my first 4 door since my LS430). Great value for the money, although if I had known they had such good lease deals on the slow-selling RL, I would have gotten that instead. I like the whole XM traffic thing and the awd.

I called my dealer and he said that weak battery often caused the E-class brake controls to malfunction. He mentioned that the car has 2 batteries (I haven't check that one out) but everytime the batt is low silly things happen to the computers. Mine was driven daily on the past 2 weeks. Previously it was used only on the weekends, hence the 4,300 km in 12 months.

***Low batt = no brakes ??***

Imagine not having brakes at 30mph coming onto a pedestrian crosswalk. I could be jailed for 2nd degree murder.

    STUPID CAR!!!
MBZ is a walking time bomb.

    Very revealing.

I'm believe your experience 100% and always had doubt about electronic throttle and brake controls.

Since this sounds like a very plausible malfunction, why hasn't it been reported in the press more? Like true accidents caused by this failure. There must be over 100,000 e and s class on the roads with the electronic brake and throttle systems.

Remember what happen to Audi and the 60 minute report?

I think my MB has throttle by wire, but not sure about the braking system.

These things are real clunkers IMO. Your mileage may vary, and maybe the more expensive models are built better, but I shouldn't have to spend more than $75k to get a decent car.

You car does have two batteries, one is a consumer battery (all the extra crap, navigation, cd player, heated/cooled seats, keyless go, whatever) and the other is for mechanical purposes (braking hydralyics, starting the car, whatnot)

Whatever your dealer told you, was probably a lie. Your SBC brakes shouldnt' be based of the consumer battery.
That's why Mercedes sucks. They don't even have decent dealers anymore. Don't worry though, they are fixing their act. They are redoing management and what not.

As long as the blind sheep keep buying the cars... they'll still have enough cash to rebuild the company.

The new MB's with "stop by wire" brakes have a hydraulic back up system.

How else did you get stopped if the electrics failed ?

I agree with you that these cars have dropped quality wise dramatically in years gone by......and I can empathize with you about your problems.......

Hey Kds, you sell these things, right? Tell the regional rep that a former owner would consider getting another MB product only if they dump the electronics. Make a nice car that runs, not a freaking computer.

    Hi Erik....

"Used to" is the operative wording.....I left the MB dealer in 2002 after 8 years......I've got my own non-franchised dealership now.

And you can't tell the German's anything......there was a thread on Rennlist about one guys experiences with PAG in management....absolutely hilarious and thought provoking....to say the least !! We used to click our heels and joke about toeing "zee party line" whenever the MB regional reps were in town. They are where they are because of who they are.......and it looks good on them.

That's what I was thinking isn't there an e-brake? (Probably to the left of the brake pedal if it's an auto?)

I test drove the new E500 when it came out and truly hated it.
The last great Mercedeses were the 2,5 Evolution and the 1998 S-Klass (with the square headlamps). ///AMG's are OK but horribly overpriced and the CLK DTM and Mclard-Mercedes and ilk are not exactly mass production cars.
