Ok, so my search (should call it a hunt) seems to finally start to pay off, but I still want to run a quick reality check on the forum.

Found this well maintained, low miles 1980 GTBi for sale, with 16" wheels, both great body and interior condition. It is running great, basically not a show car condition, but great condition and does not need any major work to be done. I have a good feeling talking with the owner and also talked over the phone to the shop that did maintenance on it.

The condition has to be confirmed when I inspect the car in person (will have the car on a lift for thorough inspection), but certainly will make my decision on the spot.

The owner wants 50k for it.

If everything checks out ok, does it seems a good deal?

    Cheers,

    Sly

If everything is nice, current services and no needs-right on the money. Some will say they can be had cheaper(and they can) but there is always something that needs to be done. I've spoken with a few well known shops, brokers and dealers out here and they have all told me that a nice driver GTBi is now about that price for a true no stories car.

Yep, I'm curious to see if in today's market this is a good deal. Looking at condition/prices it does seem a good deal. But I am new to this so inputs from more experienced members would be great.

I'd love to but they are super small and bad resolution and won't provide much valuable information.

I'll post some when I see the car.

In the meantime, I wondering about the price point of a GTBi in good to great condition, with no major maintenance to do.

Cheap? For an 1980 below condition 1 GTB, who would have thought? ;)

    Regarding value/price:

Too many variables to answer that (color, location, distance, sight seen or unseen, "gotta have it now!" or rather have a QV, etc.).

Also, it depends on who's selling and how badly someone wants an 80 GTBi.

But different sources would say... differently (FORZA's May 2015 issue, Hagerty's Valuation Guide, etc.).

Of course, there's been plenty of debate within this forum on values already.

Last Jan, Hagerty said $47,500 for this car if Condition 1.

The one you describe sounds like their Condition 3, which equals $33,900 (again, Jan 2015). But good luck getting one at that price because sellers are holding out for loftier prices (only talking about the GTBi: 1980 - 82).

Yes, that would be a Condition 1 car. :)

EDIT: Looking at the photos on the ebay ad I'm leaning towards Condition 2 instead, based on Hagerty's definition:

The facts are it's a Berlinetta and that is what you want. NOW the GTB are much more expensive and to find one in the state you are looking for with your budget might be a bit more difficult than it use to be. I think a GTB in the condition you are describing would be around $75K, or maybe more and a GTB QV probably as much.

With this GTBi which is quite rare you have the same LOOK for less investment. I would say not a deal, not too expensive but priced right IMHO.

When you see the car listen to your feelings. If you like it, if you would be proud to own that car go for it. It will be YOURS.

    That's an interesting debate.

Hagerty provides some pricing indications, others do too, but I have to say that I have not seen many GTBs and GTBis sold at the price indicated by Hagerty (both in Europe and in America). It may certainly be that Hagerty follows the trend of the market rather than imposes it, since at the end of the day a car costs as much as someone is willing to pay for it.

The market may be either unstable for a period of time or may continue to rise. All I am noticing is that GTBs sell higher than Hagerty indicates. So, maybe best is to wait and see if it stabilizes before making a move? It's always the same bet: is it going to gain in value even more or decrease (or stabilize)?

    Cheers,

Well, put it this way: prices for good GTS cars have gone up 50% to 100%+ in the past year. A little over a year ago, I was offered a carbureted GTB for about $42-$45k, I forget which. I was looking for a GTS, but I imagine a comparable early injected car would have been around $35k at the time. If the market is worth 150-200 percent this year over last, how does $50k strike you?

Also, no matter how good it is, set aside a $10k contingency for surprises.

Sylvain, when I bought my TR I was also uncertain of my move. I did it anyway because I wanted a 12 cyl Italian before I couldn't anymore. I bought it for ME and accepted the fact I may loose 10 to 15K on it. I'm so happy I did it 1 year and a half ago. Look at the price now.

If you're ready for it don't wait for the market. Do it for you, life is too short.

I'm going to be the one who goes out on a limb here and say wait for a carb or QV. For that type of money why go with the least desirable of the three?

I know the market is crazy right now but I'd try to keep a level head.

The early injected cars are the lowest power...

That said, it is FAR easier to MAKE power, than to completely restore the car otherwise.

If you like it buy it.

That is not a cheap price, it is a fair price (if all the tools and books are there)
The 308s are no longer going to be an entry level Ferrari

That price feels inflated for an 'i' car. I thought that was QV territory.

I've got my car on the monitor as a screen saver and every time I light it up, I am in love with the design ---are others coming to the party, or is there an investment buzz going on. My car is a driver, it is not completely stock, I've had it on the track a few times and it is really the most fun you can have with your cloths on I will hate to part with it, but life moves on.

    $50K-$60K-$70K is this real??

I have a number of issues with that 82 on Ebay. It doesn't appear to be in the condition of a $99,000 car. The engine looks un-kept. The front bumper looks dried out. The driver's side mirror has the plastic cover on the front part of the mount missing. The passenger's side mirror mount is broken. So who know what the true condition of the car is, but it is not a $99,000 car, even with the current market, IMO. Especially considering that what appeared to be a pretty nice 77 Euro GTB just sold on Ebay for $70,700. I really think the current bid of $65,100 is high for that car. I'd be surprised if it went much higher.

If you like it, buy it. At some point, it will be worth the 50K. If you're buying it for you, what's 5-10K too much?

I agree... but the sellers are touting its originality, even down to the "factory shipped tires", while knocking on restored cars.

sounds good, price is fair if the car is in the condition mentioned.

    yeah, post some pics.
