http://www.ebay.com/itm/150844956133 $14K buy it now. IS this where the market is on this stuff? AS the car prices elevate, do the accessories go along for the inflationary ride? For absolutely original, complete, concours quality books and tools that is an end of the world price. Many pieces missing, books especially look motley.
Expect to pay; - $5k+ for complete toolkit in great shape - $5k+ for full set of pristine docs - jack, well one sold recently on eBay for a little under $4k - original wheel chock sold recently for $400 seems like $14k is not so unreasonable if it were complete, correct and in great shape
I know who the seller is and he has delt with quite a few Dino's over the years. I think the price is on the high side, which is why it still for sale w/o a click on the buy it now. I also think that there are a GREAT number of people that would rather not spend the time to build all of these pieces and it could be a value to them.
As the values of the cars go up and more people show the cars, the prices of the tools and manuals go up as well. Tools and manuals are 4 points of the 100 point total, without them you lose at Pebble Beach or fail to score a platinum at Cavallino. If the tools and books in this auction were perfect, then $14k would be a good value. Just the manuals and pouch for a 275GTB will cost more than this.
Hey - I have a brilliant idea. I'll rent out one of my tool kits, safety triangles, wheel chocks, jacks, and manuals to whomever needs them for Pebble Beach, or wherever. Heck, if you've got a GTS, I might even throw in my "Sebring" vinyl emergency top! PM me if you need something for your otherwise platinum scoring car! Why, come to think of it, I loaned my correct wire wheels and manuals to a fellow Austin-Healey owner so he could score big points at the Austin-Healey International Meet at Breckenridge, CO in 1992, so why not do it again and get paid for it this time!!! Maybe Shawn S. and Synchro would entertain going into business with me on this deal.
You could always try move the books and tools from car to car prior to judging. I did that with the mandatory fire extinguisher for a fellow entrant one year, and no one appeared to be the wiser. He had a nice car and we didn't want to see it DQed on a technicality.
Ahhh a man that speaks from decades of experience, Thank you Brian. Tool kits and acc. have appreciated faster than the cars, I sense something special coming up on ebay within the next two weeks. I found out it happens all the time. was at the FCA Monterey 2004 when a Dino adjacent to me was scrambling to borrow my triangle and wheel chock
Not an apples to apples comparison. 1. What's a 275GTB cost? 2. How many were made? 1a. What's a Dino cost? 2b. How many were made? The pool of available accessories for Dinos is deeper than the 275GTB probably by a factor of 100. Also, at coucours, a good reprint in a Dino as a part of the manuals is considered ok, it doesn't HAVE to be original. Only difference might be if two cars are battling it out for gold or silver, it could serve as a tie breaker. And finally, I wasn't being critical, call it amazement that books and tools for these cars now got for 1/3 of what I PAID for my Dino in 2004. Sheesh, what a world we life in, eh?
Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason on collector stuff. Things don't have to make fiscal sense when you really want/need something. I've been there many times! There was a door top chrome piece for a GT on Ebay some time ago that went for $1063. Seemed silly to me but I guess not to the fellow with the winning bid. Dino at Amelia Island auction goes for $363,000 with premium. Crazy to me but glad to see it . Some folks don't want to take the time to hunt all this stuff down so are willing to splurge.
I don't know what you have coming to market, but these items haven't bounced up and down or gotten cheaper or more expensive with the fluctuation in the market. Yes, this turnkey set is high priced, but it is THE ONLY TURNKEY SET I have seen on eBay in MANY, MANY years. It is clearly geared towards a certain buyer. I have said for many years that I think the value of "Tools and Books" is about $10k. I think this is still true. I think this has been the case for several years. We have seen the price of books drop a little and then rise up some, but they are still around $4-5k for a basic set. In 2007, a book set sold for $7700 + on ebay. I was the losing bidder only because the set was for MY car. Other than that, the price has always fluctuated in that range, barring the outliers. Tools are a completly different area for discussion. They are EXTREMELY rare and difficult to come by. I sold 2 toolkits for $5k each last year, I also bought 2 toolkits for $5k each last year. The cheapest toolkit I have seen sale in the last several years was for just shy of $4k. I know that toolkits rarely come up for sale, unlike manuals, and you have to be willing to pay the price. The only reason I sold these was because of fellow Dino guys (you know who are and post here) needed them for their cars, I bought to replace what I sold for my cars. I didn't profit or make money from these transactions, just keeping Dino's, themselves, happy. Once you start adding in keyfobs, wheel chocks, triangles, etc..... stuff gets expensive quick. The time required to gather this stuff is HUGE and not easy. I can count on my fingers the number of toolkits offered publically in the last 7 years. The asking price for this turnkey package isn't crazy if you don't have or want to spend the time. Running ads doesn't always get you what you want. I bought my first Dino in 2001 and ran ads in the FML for 3 years straight for a Keyfob. I finally found one on ebay in 2004. The auction ended when I was on a vacation in Mexico. I bought the fob, but probabley spent another $100+ in fees for internet access to do so. It wasn't cheap. Dino fobs still aren't cheap. Neither are books, tools, etc..... I haven't seen any REAL market change in "Accesories" that relates to the current Dino value changes..... Just my 2 cents... Shawn
Dave, If you bought a complete book and tool set in 2004 for $5k, God Bless You. I was actively buying stuff at that time and I don't recall a deal like being around, escpecially for tools. Books were more affordable back then, but tools were near impossible to find. Shawn
Both concours that I participate in have a mandatory fire extinguisher rule. The most recent one requires you to place it behind the driver side rear tire.
Looks like a REALLY nice manual set just landed on eBay as well: http://www.ebay.com/itm/FERRARI-DINO-246-GT-S-MANUAL-SET-POUCH-HANDBOOK-COMPLETE-CONCOURS-ALL-ORIGINAL-/290741579999#ht_500wt_1416 Does anyone know where I can source one of those Shell tac clothes? I'm missing that in my set.
Wow, now this looks like a steal compare dto this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/FERRARI-308-OWNERS-MANUAL-WITH-POUCH-/190702407099?pt=Motors_Manuals_Literature&hash=item2c66bfcdbb&vxp=mtr
Shawn. My car at, which I purchased for approximately $40K, had a full set of tools, including the jack, wheel chock, window crank, and complete tool roll, etc. It also had an incomplete set of books (It had a manual and the warranty card in the wrong pouch) that a VERY kind friend of ours made complete for me. But that means I really got the car for about $33K. Deducting as it were for the tools and incomplete set of books, making it even more of a steal. My point was that tools at $14K, now cost 1/3 the price of my car purchase in 2004. D
