Can .mp3's downloaded off of iTunes be moved to a non-iPod? Or did I just waste a whole lotta freakin' time.

Nope. I'm assuming you are talking about music you bought on iTunes.

Use iTunes to burn a cd, then import from CD. Its a PITA, but works.

Ahhh! Good idea! At least I'll be able to use the songs I already bought. I really miss the days of Kazaa and Morpheus. Unfortunately, those sites are pretty much overrun with virally infected files, at least that has been my experience. :(

I was using Bearshare for a bit without any problems that I could tell, but then one day I noticed my laptop using way too much ram for the programs I was running. A couple of weeks later and it had critical failure!

If you're longing for the days of kazaa, try looking into a program called LimeWire. They make a "pro" version that you have to pay for (the cost is really negligible -- under $20.00) that has absolutely no spyware or adware or any other gack.

    http://www.limewire.com

Also, burning your iTunes music to CD (and then ripping to .mp3) is a slow but great way to remove all the problematic DRM (digital rights management) info from the .aac music files you bought from Apple.

I have used limewire before. It was ok, but I quit when I got a few infected files that Norton caught. Does the pay version really clean it up more?

None of the programs -- kazaa, Bearshare, Limewire, etc., will keep you from happening across viruses... that's a "feature" of hanging out on the Gnutella peer to peer network.

You can cut down on the likelykood that you'll become infected by a virus by:

    1. Keep your virus software very up to date
    2. Only download "media" files (.mp3, .jpg, .mov., etc.). Since these files only contain data that your computer is reading rather than executable code, it is unlikely that you'll find a virus in one of those.
    3. buy a Mac.

To totally avoid viruses, just go legit and buy your music and software :)
