Hi guys, I have brushed up my rear anti roll bar with new bushings, cleaned and added some new paint. But there seem to be something wrong with the angle of the small support between the a-arm and the torsion bar(painted yellow). It was like this when I bought the car. Could it be that the torsion bar is not for a GTS since there is different part number for a GTB or a GTS. Anyone have any suggestion to this. I don't think that bar is original, the part where the bar goes into the drop link is too long, The drop link position should be straight down like the pic below. And if you have the US GTS the diameter of the bar should be around 16mm. What's yours? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi Mike,, yes that might be the reason why. I just measured the diameter and it was 14mm. My car is not a US version but I think it was delivered to Germany. As you can see from the picture the bar does not fit exactly in the torsion bar "D" rubber either. I guess I have to look for a used torsion bar then with the correct dimensions... The front one is thicker isnt it? (16mm?) But how on earth did the car come to have a rear bar which is too long? And what car is it from? The 328 ABS one might be longer or maybe Mondial?? OP if you want to find out if its a 328 bar I can measure mine. If you can find out what it is you might be able to sell or P. Ex it.
I will take the bar off today and measure the total length of it so we can check if it belongs to a 328 or anything else. I´m sure that I have not swapped the fore and aft bars, don´t think that is possible either with the different lengths on the drop links. The fwd bar is still on the car. Mine is a 1979 GTS, I think it was delivered to Germany then later in the 90´s to UK. A lot of work has been done on it and not every part has been fixed or replaced correctly.
The torsion bar is off and total lenght is 1.17,7meter. Could that be a 328 or Mondial bar? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Looks like a gt4 bar, they are skinny. Still, would be interesting to see what your front bar looks like. What are the diameters front and rear?
The front bar is definitely more solid. The diameter is 18mm ver 14mm on the aft bar. I see superperformance uk has uprated torsion bar for the 308GTB. Maybe is worth trying one of those. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Front looks good. Maybe a gt4 owner will chime in re the rear. No idea how the Superformance bar affects handling. Maybe they have an original used roll bar as well. If you can confirm you have a gt4 bar in the rear maybe they will even take that in trade !?!
My rear bar's drop links hang straight when the car is on the ground (I didn't jack it to change the bushings, just put the rear up on ramps). Were they cocked out like that when you took the bar off? My first thought was that you maybe had the front bar on the rear.
IIRC, both the front and rear anti-roll bar on a GTS should be 18mm diameter (because the chassis wasn't as rigid torsionally as a GTB).
I doubt that the GT4 bar would fit poorly on the GTS/B. The chassis rails are the same distance apart, the suspension parts are all the same, it should fit nicely. The diameter is smaller, though. In fact, I think there is a thread about puting GTB bars on GT4s. I wonder if this car has two front bars on it.
Brian, that may be the case. So I pulled off the front bar and placed the bars beside each other. They are almost identical except for the diameter 14mm ver 18mm. Many thanks for inputs on this issue and I have already ordered a new uprated rear torsion bar from Superperformance uk, which btw gives very good service in my opinion. Hopefully they have in stock so it can be on the car after easter holyday is done. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Im pretty certain you have a GT4 bar there..l removed the one off my GT4 and it was around the 14mm diameter.I had one custom made in 19mm for around $250
Case closed on this issue now. The new "uprated" anti-roll bar from Superperformance has arrived and is fitted to the car It sure looks better and I guess the roll stability will be better. Next now is to complete the front suspension with all new "poly" bushings, new wheel bearings, sand blasted and powder coated a-arms and finally new "Wilbers" damper w/ springs. I have been considering the uprated rear anti roll bar myself. Would be interested to hear how your car is behaving with it.
It makes sense that Superformance specify the uprated one is for GTB. The GTS chassis is likely too flexible to handle any suspension stiffening. The original GTS bars are thinner than GTB.
