OK, I have been asking about rear bearings for a while. I wanted to wait until winter before starting this project. Finally I got the guts to undertake this task. When I would corner I would hear a bad grinding noise. When I put the car (1981 308GTSi) on the lift I had play in the rear passenger side wheel. It would wiggle real bad. First thought, bad wheel bearing. Well, here is what I found. I removed calibers then the rotor then the shaft. Once I started I quickly found this so called lock nut. So, I started asking around for this tool. Today, I noticed grinding markings on my rear upright from the rotor. I checked my rotor and it was worn around the inside edge. I finally decided I have to remove the lock nut. I finally touched the lock nut and found it was as loose as it could be. All I had to do was use a hammer to bend back the locking part in both spots and I could use my darn finger to loosen it. From what I understand this is supposed to be torqued to something like 200lbs, right? Now, here is what I have found. Since the lock nut was not tight it caused the shaft to wear down. After close inspection the bearings seem fine. I will still replace them since I have it apart but, are these bearings supposed to be tappered? OR are they roller bearings. I had a friend over who suggested I have the shaft ARC sprayed resized. ANY suggestions here? This locknut was a damn joke. I laughed when I could tighten it 2 revolutions with my finger!

geeze Sam, good thing you found it when you did. most likely it was not installed properly. i cant offer any advice on the welding.F.UK has all the parts , the axle is expensive though. perhaps a used one is better than a welded one. best of luck to you. it took quite a bit of effort to get my right rear all apart. the allen key bolts with the jap nuts were a real pain to break loose!!! after a test drive this weekeend when its all back together i want to do the left rear as well " while i am in there!" :) i hope it works out for you, glad you caught it before you or the car got hurt.

That axle is MEGA expensive (over $1300 EACH) and they have been known to crack. You are very lucky to have not lost a wheel. Be sure to properly crack check the axle. If it has uneven wear than you will almost certainly be in for a new or used one. While in there change the bearings because they are very cheap.

I was wondering if I could have the axle ARC Sprayed. Then machined back to its orginal size. Then replace the bearings. From what I heard, I can get this done pretty cheap and it is supposed to be extremely strong. Any suggestions? I would rather do this than buy a new or used.
