Thank for all the advice regarding my ongoing noise from rear brakes. It appears I have uncovered a common problem. I would like to take out rear brake pads; swap pads over from left to the right calliper and vice versa. Perhaps look at re-chamfering the leading edges of the pads (the brakes do not make any noise rolling backwards). Clean up, re-lube pads with anti-squeak paste.

The 488 rear calliper needs to be removed from the hub to get at the pads. It this a DIY job? I cannot find a video tutorial on it or a tech document. Releasing the EPB?, I don't know torque for the bolts, can you reuse the bolts (Porsche require new bolts), is thread lock required etc... Any tips or advice very welcome.

You should be able to pull the specs from the 458 workshop manual, since it's effectively the same car. I can look them up if you decide to tackle the job yourself.

Blue loctite is never a bad idea on brake hardware :)

It's a DIY job if you have a floor jack and the proper tools. I don't remember on the 458 specifically, but a lot of times you can swap pads just by removing the cross pin that is on the top of the caliper. I run Wilwood forged calipers on my Toyota and you can swap pads in like 10 minutes just by sliding out the top pin. When I did my 458 pads, I vaguely remember pulling the entire caliper off, however.

Anyway, it's a DIY sort of job. Nothing too fancy. If you've done the brakes on any other car, the Ferrari isn't all that much different. Feel free to PM me if you need the exact bolt specs.

Looks like you'll have to remove the caliper to swap pads all right. It's not too bad of a job.

The 458 and 488 does not share brake calipers.

Don't worry about the parking brake as you are not going to touch it. It is part of the caliper, and all you have to do prior to removing the caliper, is to disengage it via the button on the lower dash.

All you have to do is to remove the two caliper bolts. Before doing this, remove the two little bolts fixing the disc to the hub. This is important as it is much safer to do the pad swap without the disc on, and it is so easy to remove. A chipped disc is expensive. Note that this is a two man job.

Now after you remove the two small bolts holding on the disc, proceed to remove the two caliper bolts. These are 10mm hex bolts.

Then one of you grab the disc and the other the caliper. Turn it outward and slide the disc out from between the pads.

    Set the disc aside.

Now you can just click out the pads, no tools required. It's very similar to the Porsche system. Just be careful of the pad wear sensors clipped into the pads - these can be removed if you need to.

If you feel more comfortable working on the pads without someone holding the caliper, just use one of the caliper bolts to hold it in place with a few turns.

After you have cleaned and lubed everything, just put it all back together. Caliper bolts to 100nm and disc bolts to 15nm.
