To replace both rear brake pads, my dealer is quoting me $1800. Has anyone else had to do this and can confirm this is reasonable? Sounds way too high to me. All they have to do is remove the wheels, unpin the calipers and replace the pads. I used to do this on my BMW. Is this kind of work worth outsourcing or are the parts really that expensive?

    Thanks!

I am surprised that rear ones are needed replacement before the front.

On these newer cars like the 458 the rears get involved with cornering sometimes.

I think the cars computer needs reprogramming or resetting a parameter or some such thing so its likely you will need the dealer. And the pads are not cheap. I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted that for the pads alone.

If you have relatively low miles on your car I'd want them to show me the pads themselves as well as the computer read out that states the pads need replacing.

That's the price for driving these cars in Sport or even Race. I always drive my car in CT-Off primarily to gain control of the rear wheels but as a side benefit to save my rear brake pads. If you've been driving the car hard in Sport or Race.. your rear brakes have been gripping your rotors..

To answer your question.. yes, the rear pads need to be replaced before the fronts (if you've been driving in sport) and they are expensive.

Your BMW likely had steele brakes while your 458 has CCM brakes... big difference in cost of pads... Rear pad set for 458 is listed for $2260 at Ricambi America: ferrari 458 Italia Parts : Table 29 - REAR BRAKE CALLIPERS

@number_six, yes the parts are that expensive; at least for the OEM parts. I replaced the fronts and rears on mine earlier this year and the pads alone were ~$4000. My car had about 30,000 miles at the time including several track days at COTA (pretty hard on brakes and tires). You can switch to Pagid pads for much less although my dealer was reluctant to install them (he had less familiarity with the Pagid pads for ceramic brakes on the 458)

I had Pagid pads installed on my Scud front brakes is much cheaper and stopping power is much better as well.

Read pads likely need replacing first because of traction control engagement ;-)

$1800 seems like a deal. Was $1900 to do the rear brakes on our Range Rover. $2500 to do the fronts! (they are larger Brembos than even the 458 though ;-)

My 458 is a 2010 and with just 6800 miles I have not needed any brake pads.

Not sure but I think Ferrari can be ordered with special brakes. They are expensive but are supposed to last the life of car.

I bought one of my cars with these ceramic brakes. My 458 has standard brakes

If you live near central Florida or can have your car sent here you may be in luck.
The mechanic that does all of my cars was lead mechanic at a big local Ferrari dealer.

I will put you two in contact if it helps. And yes that price sounds very expensive to me.

Good luck what ever you do.

Let's put it this way, My Lexus ISF front Brembo pads alone were $600.00 at my dealer, and for steel brakes.
I would expect to see your number, and not surprised.

Thanks for the responses. I have tracked my car 9 times (4 in race, 5 in CT off).

Ferrame - Did the dealer install the Pagids on your scud? I have had good results with Pagid pads in the past (on my track BMW), never had any problems with them. Which pads did you use, and does your scud have carbon ceramic discs?

Six, if you search the forums for pagid pads on a 458 you'll get a few responses. IIRC, folks have had good experience with them but make sure you look into the pads for ceramic rotors (I don't recall the part # but you'll find it in the search)

Use corvette ZR1 with ceramic rotor option pads. Cost about $450.

I installed those pads myself on my Scud and they are "Pagid RSC1 U8091". All Ferraris built from 2008 have ceramic brakes as standard.
