Rear caliper piston

I have a 246 rear caliper apart and the main body of the adjuster mechanism that is inside the piston is broken. I do have an incomplete adjuster from a 308. As you can see from the picture, it is different and the inside of the piston is machined differently. I have talked to the usual sources and the response has been that rebuilt calipers are available with a good core in return. I have yet to find someone that has individual parts that they are willing to sell.

I am posting here in hope that someone may have parts left over from a past project that they might be willing to sell.

TonyL: My understanding is that the new stainless piston is the piston without the adjuster mechanism. The piston that I have is useable. It is the intricate assembly inside that is broken.

champtc: Other calipers are certainly an option, but at this point I hope to be able to fix the relatively minor problem with the original brakes.

John: I do know about the Porsche connection. I remember looking into this some time ago and I thought that only the 914-6 had the incorporated handbrake. The regular 914 had a "normal" caliper with handbrake shoes inside the rotor. I never followed through with a visit to a Porsche shop to verify this. It may be that 914-6 calipers would be as rare as 246 calipers. I think that although the individual parts may not interchange, a complete 308 piston and adjuster assembly can replace the original in the 246. Right now, I don't have a complete unit of either, but I am awaiting a couple of promising call-backs.

Pietro: The car is a '72 (0364). It does have the later calipers with the handbrake operating lever on the top. My workshop manual shows that cars from 01118 to 02130 have a very similar caliper except the handbrake operating lever is on the bottom. I am assuming that the cars prior to 01118 had the Girling setup with a conventional caliper and a separate, small, mechanical caliper for the handbrake like the 206 cars have. The caliper that I am trying to repair looks,externally, just like all the 308 calipers. The thing that is giving me trouble is that the piston adjuster assembly is different. I am pretty confident that a complete 308 piston and adjuster assembly will work in the 246 calipers.

Finding 308 parts should be a little easier. I did look at a Chilton manual and it does appear that both the 914 and 914-6 had these calipers, so that might be useful.

I did buy a pair of calipers on e-Bay. The bodies look different, but I am hoping that I can use the piston assemblies. I am hoping to see them in a few days.

Finitele: The calipers disassemble in a pretty normal fashion. The only thing that might need drilling is the small "freeze plug" that covers the snap ring that has to be removed to withdraw the handbrake operating lever. I drill a small hole in the plug and screw in a self-tapping screw to push out the plug.

Thanks very much for your reply. I just got the calipers that I bought on e-Bay and the pistons look like they will solve my problem. They are the later "308" style, but I am quite sure that the whole piston and adjuster assembly will be a direct replacement for the earlier "246" style.
