An interesting question came up. The rear (engine) deck gas lifting struts: did the OEM parts have the word 'Ferrari' or the logo printed on them? Did the 308, QV and 328 differ?
Yes they all have "Ferrari" written on (All the QV's at least) but they are all made in Germany. Same part # at Ricambi for the 328...
Is it possible to get these struts refilled / recomissioned to keep the originality of the logo? Any idea of cost / service providers?
This is one of the reason I had mine rebuilt because they're original and it says Ferrari on it. Frank Irvine of STRUTWISE (StrutWise Technical Services - Gas Lift Strut Service and Repair) did it for me and I think I paid something like $50 for the pair.
My 81 GTSi has Ferrari printed on the engine cover struts. I had them recharged when I purchased the car 2.5 years ago as they wouldn't hold the cover up, cost for the pair was $65 Australian equivalent to about $45 USD Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
My original gas struts have been replaced with aftermarket ones (OEM no longer available) they look exactly like the original ones but without the Ferrari print on them... My question is, during concours or preservation judging say at, Cavallino or FCA event would I receive any point deductions?
None that clearly shows the strut(s) and the car is in storage and I won't see it again until about April...
I would image it would depend on how closely they look over the car. You would need to read over the official judging criteria to see whether gas struts are considered a replaceable item, like tyres, radiator caps, wiper blades, windscreens, etc or not.
What I did was buy a sheet of assorted sizes of Ferrari model decals from Ebay and selected the correct size and applied. Then oversprayed with satin lacquer.
Anyone measured the length of the original OEM struts with Ferrari printed on them? I think 20"-21" IIRC. The OEM brand is Stabilus. Replacements from Maranello Classic Parts are Stabilus Lift-O-Mat but without "Ferrari" printed on them.
I second Strutwise. I had them recharge mine and I think it was about $120 US including shipping. They work great! Very personal attention and very knowledgeable.
