I was driving down the road this afternoon in my 328 when, ... plop, my rear view mirror fell off. I can tell that is was just glued on to the glass, but don't know if any generic glue can be used (crazy glue?) and if there are any tricks I need to be aware of. There appears to be a square piece of clear plastic bonded to the windshield where the mirror was mounted. Do I peel it off and replace it? Leave it? Does it form a base between the windshield and the base of the mirror or can the mirror be glued directly to the glass? Thanks for your help

Auto parts stores have the glue - I believe it's just regular super glue with a different label but who knows. I have had mirrors fall off all sorts of cars; just follow the directions on the glue and glue it back.

Windshield glass shops will put in on correctly. Local one here charges $5 and gives a lifetime warranty.

I got double sided tape for a Porsche 914. It is the exact same size.

Thanks all. The easiest route will be to stop by the local auto glass shop. If I try to do it myself, I'll wind up gluing it on upside down.

Didn't you guys watch the movie Gum Ball Rally? An Italian race driver get in the Daytona, rips off the rearview mirror and mutters to his co-pilot "What's Behind You Doesn't Matter"
