    Hello,

I am trying to find a replacement for a 308 rear view mirror glass, not the mirror itself, just the glass that goes in front of the rear view mirror...

I am finding that most places don't carry glass that thin, its about 1/8 or 1/16 of an inch in thickness. Any idea on who or where I can pick it up? Even Mailorder???

I just can't justify buying a new rear view mirror for just the cheap glass!

    Cheers

    Hi Glen...

I replaced my 308's passenger-side glass a couple years ago also. Went to Pep-Boys and purchased a replacement off-the-shelf side mirror glass for a large vehicle so I'd have a little "extra" glass to work with. It came with the 3M adhesive strips for fastening.

Next, I removed the existing mirror glass very carefully by first heating it with a hair blow-dryer (warm/hot to touch) and then carefully pried the glass away.

Then I simply took both mirror glass items down to the local glass/mirror shop and had them cut a new one out of the mirror I purchased at Pep-Boys using the old mirror as a template. They even affixed the 3M adhesive stips and slightly beveled the edges of the glass for me.

Finally, I carefully affixed it to the existing mirror housing mount and it works like a champ. There's only a slight difference in the mirror glass tint, but I hardly notice it.

IIRC, the total cost including new mirror and glass cutting service was less than $25.00.

    Hope this helps...

EDIT: OOOPS...please disregard my post...just realized you were referring to the interior rear view mirror.

Go to a good frame shop.

They can cut the glass, and often carry it in a variety of thicknesses.

The mirror itself, if it is similar to my 246GT, will have a gasket between the glass and the mirror. Remove the glass carefully, as the gasket will break into little pieces and can't be replaced.

I ended up using gasket sealer (high temp 3m stuff) to replace the gasket.

Did you break the glass, or is it pitted, dirty?

I just broke the glass, somehow... It was cracked, and do have the entire glass piece. I can try a frame shop near me, but was hoping to get an exact name of a place that carries 1/16" glass so I dont have to keep driving around and asking, which is what I have done so far. Thanks though and I can give them a call prior!
    Cheers

Funny, I did almost the exact same thing on my 328, since the non-wide-angle glass in the stock mirror made it almost worthless. So I bought wide-angle glass at Pep Boys and did the same thing for the exact same price! The only difference was that I did not remove the existing glass but just attached the new glass to the old with the included double-sided tape.

yeah, I was going to say the same thing...try a frame shop...that glass is much thinner. If none is nearby, go to the drug store or WalMart and buy a cheap picture frame, and remove the glass...that would be a cheap source. Then take that to the glass shop for cutting.

    Thanks for the heads up.

Any good glass shop should have it. When you call, ask them if they stock SSB (single strength) or DSB (double strength) window glass. That's all it is. Have used either to replace the clear glass though SSB goes in easier. Cost of the glass is 'bout $1 + whatever they want to charge you to cut it to pattern & seam the edges slightly (so they ain't razor sharp).

After the original glass company said the thickness was too thin, I asked another company for the recommened Single Density Glass, and they said no problem. They cut one perfectly, and fit it in. THANKS AGAIN!!
