Hey guys do we know what the factory did to attach the rear view to the windshield in a 1986 328? Mine got knocked by a passenger and fell off this morning. Was glued on up until that point but don’t know if it had ever been reattached before. I’ve seen the Porsche adhesive pads that are supposedly the same size as what Ferrari used to sell, but also read people do rear view mirror glue. Wondering what’s factory correct. Thanks!

Rear view mirror adhesive is available at any parts store. Comes in a single-use size tube.

Right, I’m asking what the factory did. The parts diagram shows an adhesive patch so guessing that’s what it was originally.

It’s so much better to use the double sided adhesive pad designed just for this purpose than gluing it directly to the glass plus this pad add a little cushion between the glass and the rear view mirror and much easier to remove the rear view base in the future if need to.

You’re on the right path replicating the method used by the factory.
Lancia Scorpion windshields were/are sensitive to rearview mirror mounting: use the wrong adhesive and the differential thermal expansion between the mounting point and the glass on a hot sunny day would crack the windshield.
Don’t know if a 308 would be similarly susceptible to this, but using the factory method/product would minimize the potential.

I used the Porsche adhesive pad and it's held up just fine for the past ten years.
