"Ferrari's lawsuit goes to court early in March, and it's expected that in it the automaker will argue that the Purosangue Foundation isn't well known enough to have properly benefited from the name and therefore shouldn't be allowed exclusive rights to it. That carries an air of arrogance and condescension, no?"

    Or....

.....Ferrari DID Google the name, approached the foundation with a seven figure offer and was rebutted simply BECAUSE it was Ferrari asking.....

.....The foundation then attempted to extort the big bad goliath company, telling Ferrari that if it didn't up the offer to nine figures or more, they would start a media tour claiming they were taken advantage of and they are the poor little foundation just trying to make it by.....

Just saying there are two perspectives to the accusations and Ferrari had to resort to legal means.

Just assumptions on my part, playing the devils advocate as I do at times..

Personally, I like La SUV better...

certainly wrong for the company to extort, but then Ferrari should have walked away, instead they became a bully and spent 7-digits overpowering them with lawyers. if they found out early on in the Google phase as you say, then it wouldn't have been a big deal to change. as others have said, it is a terrible name to begin with.

They spent just under $9,000 in court to fight this, would you believe it, and the attorney gets one of the first SUV's to boot as a bonus for winning...

    :D

I haven't heard many stories lately except maybe from Daniel a couple years ago, but in the 2000's Ferrari had a firm on retainer harassing fan sites like FerrariChat. Most gave in because Ferrari just had overwhelming legal power. The fact is that NOTHING by these sites was actually illegal or infringing, but Ferrari was the one trying to do the shake out with threats. Now if a site infringing, then they deserve to get their ass kicked, we run into potential sponsors every couple years that don't have proper rights with Ferrari for their products.

This. Not a good name, but regardless the optics of the suit are worse.

Consider this, the “charity” spent all of $4000 to promote anti-doping in 2019.

my guess is this. Ferrari said, well give you some modest amount to take over something that to me seems like a vanity project. Person asked for much more $$$$.
    Of to court we go.
reminds me a lot of Nissan.com

We don’t know, but the narrative of global corporation versus small charity is already out there.

I worked in marketing for a global company, and you really don’t want to have to get into this discussion.

Problem is any real-word-based name you can think of is probably already used somewhere, and Purosangue wasn’t in a remotely similar business. There could have been some polite discussion and leave it at that.

Totally agree Rob- But I think Ferrari is smart like a fox perhaps- All this drama just brought additional light and discussion to the name and as such the new model. As the saying goes "there is no good press or bad press- just press" <or something like that>

Before this pretty much nobody knew of the Foundation- Now millions do- so perhaps an immediate financial loss for them but long term? Perhaps a silver lining.

Obviously my marketing resume isn't at the top of the pile at Ferrari  but to me the name is difficult to pronounce and spell and departs from their usual naming schemes- perhaps on purpose since so does the vehicle- who knows.

Personally I would have done "La Prestazione Utilita" or something-

But that's why my phone is not ringing from Maranello- Ha :rolleyes::p

This sounds vaguely familiar (circa 1995) -

Jaguar Cars Ltd. has settled a lawsuit with the Jacksonville Jaguars

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) _ Jaguar Cars Ltd. has settled a lawsuit with the Jacksonville Jaguars, a new NFL expansion team, over the team’s name and original logo, the team and company said Monday.

Jaguar Cars, a division of the Ford Motor Co., had claimed the name and logo infringed upon its leaping-cat trademarks.

Details of the settlement weren’t disclosed, but Ford Motor Co. will be the official automobile partner of the Jacksonville Jaguars, officials said.

Ford and its divisions, Lincoln-Mercury and Jaguars, will be the exclusive sponsor of the Jaguars in the categories of domestic and foreign automobile and truck manufacturer, retail sales and leasing. The agreement provides for stadium signs, advertising and exclusive broadcast rights.

The team has changed its logo from a leaping cat to a snarling feline.

Why not just change the name to " Snowflake " and avoid the suits . Good grief , whos the imbecile that came up with the name, maybe the same imbecile that decided to build it in the first place.

    Thank you

They should have called the Panettiere- The Breadvan- would give it some historical connection to Ferraris past

Different country…..different rules. In the US Ferrari would be forced to write a big check and license the name from the owner. In Italy…..unless you really use it…..someone else can use it too.

Still probably better than China where they don’t bother to even ask to use your trademarks and copyrights.

BTW….not a fan of the name.

I'm not a fan of the Purosangue name either but perhaps "La Sacrilege" was taken by an organizations with bigger pockets or political clout...no, I didn't do a Google search.
