Is the water pump from a 348 worth getting the rebuild kit? As far as I know, it was working fine. Pulled it as a precaution during my recent service.

I've been cleaning out my garage lately and trying to figure out what to keep and what to throw out.

Yes, but the key parts are the bearing and a metal impeller. Without those, I would not consider rebuilding the old pump. Available anywhere? Hill Engineering should perhaps step in here.

I wouldn't think a metal impellar would ever fail unless the bearing had failed and caused the impellar to rub on something - in which case I don't know if it would be candidate for rebuild in the first place.

But the original impeller was plastic. If metal, of course keep it.

Dick Jordan had a stash of bearings that he machines to fit the 348 when he rebuilds them. He is retired, but his son is taking over the business. Perhaps the bearing is available there.

Years ago that kit was a yellow box ferrari kit. I never understood that because there was no bearing. I thought about re-engineering the bearing to accept another bearing because the factory bearing was proprietary top secret,KGB,CIA unobtainum. 26 years later we still don't know what it is. BEcause it ran the Tbelt I thought it better to just buy a new pump. But as the pumps get more costly and more rare a rebuild solution of some kind will have to be found. There are many problems with rebuilding WP's but they are solveable and DIY possible.

Why can't you measure the dimensions of the bearing and try to find one. I find it hard to believe it is proprietary.

Many more knowledgeable than us have searched high and low for a replacement of the NLA bearing that is not the Chinese one of unknown quality and the subject of much debate. I have my OEM pump pulled from my recent major that I may dissect and take a closer look into anyway, out of curiosity. If no one has by then, I'll post up any dimensions, p/ns, etc.

SKF, Timkin etc all have contracts with people like Ferrari and will only produce and odd sized bearing for them etc.

I am sure this was topic was on the forum here many years ago, talked about a few times I think actually.

The size is unique and only sold to Ferrari, although it's an SKF bearing, in an SKF bearing box...........inside a Ferrari box. Lol

I am liking what FBB reckons! Machine out where the bearing goes if possible and fit a bearing with a slightly larger outside diameter that is readily available off the shelf from SKF.

Wouldn't be that hard I am sure, as long as there is meat in the water pump housing body.

Or just rebuild or buy new water pumps, meh.

    In case anyone is wondering.

I haven't posted a DIY water pump rebuild because I haven't done it yet. The long end shaft needs to be machined to look like this pic. I don't have the machining equipment to do it, nor have I taken the time to find a shop to do it for me.

Maybe it is possible to design a new shaft that fits with a standard bearing
    Just an idea
I never disassembled a water pump

    No.

This is the exact bearing Dick Jordan was using. He machined them to fit.
