If this is covered, I apologize, but I was wondering, is it better to try and rebuild your own water pump, or buy a rebuilt one? And if rebuilding one is the choice, what is involved, once you buy all the pieces? Are special machining tools needed, or can a shadetree manage it?

    Thanks.

If this is a car you are keeping long term, consider upgrading to the large bearing water pump as used on the QV's and 328's.

Another place you might want to check is http://www.fdrbp.com/ the flying dutchman. He's been doing Ferrari WP's for a while and did mine. He says it should run for 100K miles. Look up his web site.

Forgive my ignorance, but is the housing and gasket seat the same for both the small bearing units and the large bearing units?

just seeing this for the first time.

bit of info for FBB regarding the bearing/seal for the 348 water pump overhaul.

I've just been through this, there is a superceded part from Ferrari and Daniel of Ricambi has now the 'latest' parts and or overhaul kit including the 'new' bearing/seal. This part is shared by 360,456,512,612,355,F50 & Mondial models, according to the main Maranello parts page.

Coincidently, I must have had the 'last' bearing/seal from Daniel as his website now shows the superceded item.

The original part # was 130932 and this has been superceded by part # 183759.

Be interesting to hear from Ferrarichatters that have used this item in a 348 water pump overhaul.
