need a MAF ... prices range from 650 to 350 for new...the 350 is not in stock and for crazy reasons I can't wait the 10 days for delivery.

came across a CA company onthe web that will rebuild them for 180. with one day turn around.. they say the sensor is very simple and basic and that they fix it to OEM factory spec and that it is guaranteed for 12 months....I am skeptical but if there is a problem it IS one of the easiest parts to replace but if it does fail the car runs so bad it is unuseable...I wonder if it can be rebuilt and if so, and they are doing this, can the home mechanic rebuild it, hey if birdman can make a fuse panel, I guess these guys just put in a new circuit board or probably something even easier since he did tell me they are very very simple sensors and it only takes them a short while to repair them to the factory spec....ps I also learned that Bosch provides radside service for one year for failure of their starters and alternators....

    HEEEEEEY!!!! Who are these guys?!

I say it's worth a shot, especially if they warranty the work. I know you can get the alternators rebuilt. Now if we can add the MAFS to it, MAN what a great thing for the brotherhood.

They are Directauto.com...I have never used them before, this is an act of desperation, but I will share my experience when all this in done...these guys rebuild almost everything electrical on the Ferrari , well, it seems all expensive Bosch electrical parts and provide a year guarantee....worth looking into as the cars get older, you need more parts, the parts get scarcer and more expensive and more car owners are going after fewer parts and the cars value continues to slip making the high cost of the parts less and less economical....this way we can keep costs down, and support a guy who is trying to increase the supply of parts with rebuilds. I wanted the new pat and 350 was a good deal but I couldn't wait the 10-14 days for delivery and 650 was kinda much. It seems the part is just a sensor wire and some really basic electronics ...all from Bosch. They say they have been doing this will all the Bosch stuff for many cars for years...with electronics, it either works or it doesn't...no moving parts here so I think if a rebuild tests OK on teh bench, it should be ok in my car for a while..not much will change, other then some heat, to the environment, but the sensor sits up where it is ventelated and is ez to replace if it fails w/in the year

I was thinking of switching from stock Air filter to K&N, but was cautioned that the oil can mist and get in the airflow and then clog and fail the thin little wire int eh Mass Air Flow Sensor, being these things are in the range of 100's of dollars it seems the K&N doesn't save much money and the few paltry HP xtra you get, won't be noticed or worth it...any thoughts or experience or is this an old wives tale?

Our 348 MAF's are self-cleaning, just like the ovens in our kitchens. After a decent drive, our 348's send a high charge to the MAF sensor wire a few seconds after we kill the engine. That charge cleans the sensor wire of oil, cloth, and various particles that make it through our air filter.

If either MAF isn't clean, then it's time for a rebuilt or new MAF.

For $190, it seems like an easy decision.

I have seen a few threads on this supposed problem....I have also heard that it is usually caused by someone putting way too much oil on the filter. If you oil it only as recommended (lightly), and only apply the oil on the "input" side, you should never have a problem.

I can't say to what degree it's based on application error with the oil, nor do I know anything about a MAF sensor that cleans itself, but I do know that it's been a legitimate warranty claim issue at one or more of the Big 3 automakers...

I've had a K&N on my 348 for a long time. The MAFS are clean as a whistle.

One of my former so-called "fine german automobiles" also had a self-cleaning MAF. It would clean upon start up.

For those that are iffy on the issue, just pull the MAF, and gently swab the wire with some alcohol every once in a while.
