I had some dashboard lights that would not shut off when my key was removed from the ignition, thereby draining my battery. In searching for this electrical problem, I was told that the alternator and regulator need to be removed and replaced. I was quoted 20-30 hours labour....as these parts are buried in the engine bay. They need to remove the fuel tank, hoses, inner fender panel, etc. Has anyone else rebuilt or replaced these parts, and at what cost?

My 1972 Dino GT has 183,000 miles. First owner did 51,000 and I have put the rest on. Alternator and/or regulator have been a problem every 2-3 years, 10,000-15,000 miles. Original regulator was electro-mechanical (two relay type mechanisms). Have replaced twice with electronic regulators. Many Chrysler alternators used 3 terminal regulators. Work just fine. No problem finding a replacement from Pep Boys, etc. Regulator is under dash, just to left of steering wheel. Ten minute job to replace. You must be comfortable standing on your head.

Alternator is another problem. Oil can/will get on brushes. Brushes are uncommon at rebuild shops. You need a shop that will make brushes if necessary. Easy to fix IF YOU CAN GET ALTERNATOR OUT.

I have '72 US car with air pump and AC. Air pump clutch had been removed so alternator could be pulled without disconnecting clutch. First few times I took out water lines and right side gas tank. Major grief. Finally noticed that tank had relief that had been formed just in front of alternator. I found out why.

Take out water lines, unbolt alternator and alternator will come out with 1/8" to spare. Do not know whether relief is there in all tanks but now brush change is trivial. Last year (2004) my rebuild shop charged $65 to clean, change brushes and call me to pick up. I did everything else in less than a day.

    Good luck,
    John

I have removed my alt. 2 times. I did not need to remove the gas tank to do it...but it is very tight. BTW, I took my around 6 hours to do it...thats if you don't run into any other problems

After repairing the alternator for the third time in four years,I fabricated a sheet metal shield to keep oil from dripping on the brushes.I also put a piece of innertube between the shield and the alternator to prevent the possibility of arcing or other electrical problems.Three years later,so far so good!

Thanks for your advice it's been very helpful.
One last question - my mechanic feels this could have been a result of hooking up the battery charger inversed - even for a moment '+' to '-'. Have you ever done this or do you think this may have been possible for frying an alternator? MB

    John & Stu,

For what sounds like the inevitable point in time when I WILL have to deal with the alternator, is it removed from under the car?

    Thanks,

    Manny

Usually this will affect the voltage regulator

Sort of! Not too bad. Jack up right rear, remove wheel, stone shield, water, air conditioning, etc. lines in the way and (if gas tank has relief and no air pump clutch) the alternator can come out. Disconnect battery power first, make sure both wires are loose above. Figure that wires have to be on the alternator when it goes back in. Trying to put wires on alternator when it is in place is a nightmare.

A lift is not required but sure is nice. Do not use the Dino jack. Use a trolley jack under the right frame rail that can get the rear wheel 4" off the ground. Then put a jack stand under the frame and something soft on the ground. It is your back. If you do have a lift, it is a trivial project. Luck.
