I had my 95 engine with 41,000 miles rebuilt by Engine Fixer--Gary Sharpe. The pistons were replaced with slightly larger pistons and new rings. Liners were replaced with thicker coating than factory. New cam bearings were also replaced. The heads were ported along with the throttle bodies. The pistons were heat coated. New guides and valves. Car is very smooth and has much more power. I have GruppeM intake along with hyperflows and Fabspeed headers. The car pulls so strong in any gear. The whole exhaust system is ceramic coated including the muffler. Heat is not an issue and Heat shields for the alternator, A/C, were made and all lines heat wraped. I had wear on one cylinder and burned through the header. The orginal liner coating is thin and the rings wear through the lining. causing problems. I think that there will be many more 355's with this type of problem. Before my rebuild the car was very strong except I burned through the header. Cost-- Almost as much as the car is worth! I plan on keeping it for many more years to get my "investment" back. I will dyno if get a chance this year.

Pictures and dyno stat! ;) I'm betting that motor is making 360 power no problem (400hp), and probably a bit more.

What is the standard HP for that 355? I thought it was already around 360 hp.

    Bob,
I hadn't heard anything from you. Glad to hear you guys finally got it running.
Glad to hear it's stronger than before...I'll be curious to hear some dyno numbers. We planned on dyno testing two that I built a few years ago, one was stock, the other had the same mods as yours. But sadly, we never got around to it, but in that case both guys had driven each others cars and commented how much harder the modded one pulled.
Glad to hear everything is good, that's what we want!! :D

Freakin' awesome .......... :D!!!! ........... there is no reason to sell a 355 ......... as this shining example shows ....... with the right methods ......... everything can be fixed and addressed to as good or better than new specification ............ :) ........ the cost may have been high ....... but probably not much different than spending more to buy a 360 ....... except your motor, is now in much better health than any used 360 ........ all in the timeless ..... much better looking 355 chassis ............ ;)

Hats off to enginefxr and F355Bob for taking these bold steps to 'immortalize' the greatness of the almighty 355 .......

Now a quick question to enginefxr ........ on these piston/sleeve sets ......... how much bigger than stock are they? Does it take total displacement close to 3.55 or to 3.6 ....... :)?? Down the road, should my 355 need it ........ I could see having this piston/sleeve set ...... properly adding to the insanity ...... :D!!

    Oz-
The engine goes from 3.5 liter (213.3 cu. in.) to 3.53 liter (215.66 cu. in.).
The piston/rings sets are MUCH cheaper the OEM Ferrari stuff, and new sleeves are available or your existing sleeves can be bored out and re-coated (to a much greater thickness than the original coating) and diamond honed for proper finish for the rings.
This would be a perfect match to your "Goth" airboxes and exhaust setups.....

    More pics of Bob's engine...
as it came in, the refinished cylinders, the coated chambers and valves and ported heads, the assembled short block with coated pistons, finished engine, and finally the ported throttle bodies.

These were a few of the pictures from the rebuild. Parts and labor for the rebuild which included the porting, new bearings, Hill tensioners, pistons and rings, new sleeves, gasket kit, disassembly and assembly was $20,000 plus removing and reinstalling engine.

Oh my....a beautiful motor now (although what a $$$$ cost!) I may have missed it in an earlier thread, but why the rebuild? 41,000 miles shouldn't be enough to require a rebuild? There is a high mileage 355 that would be great for a project like this in the ferrariads section- it's $34K w 86K miles (I have no affiliation, just that it would be a great candidate for a project like this)- I know the cost of redoing that car will exceed $34K, but to your point- if you plan on keeping the car for a while the benefit is building it to your liking!

While that's still a lot of money, it's not as expensive as I thought it would be. A race engine rebuild runs that or more and I would put the 355 engine into that category. It looks like it was very well done and, most importantly, you're very happy with the results.

I'm with Andrew and would love to understand what the tell tale signs or the pivot point that drove the rebuild?

not to hijack your thread but I just recently rebuilt my engine in my nsx. Granted it cost less, but I wish I would have modded everything like you did.

thanks for your posts and pictures.
