According to Portland Ferrari dealer, problem was fixed in Lusso vs. FF, but not sure that is the case. It makes me very nervous.

Given that this thread was started three years ago by a disappointed Lusso owner, I very much doubt that Portland Ferrari are telling you the truth.

Of the 34 reported PTU failures on FChat, 26% have been Lussos.

But where’s the worry? There are known engineering fixes for the PTU at sensible cost.

You’re far more likely to suffer a DCT failure than a PTU failure. I’d reserve your nerves for the DCT…

Yea, from everything I am reading it seems that Lusso’s are affected. I have the Power warranty now, but intend to self insure sometime in the future, and would prefer a fix to a replacement. Not sure if I should just bite the bullet and do the repair as preventative. I wasn’t aware of DCT failures as a weak point. I have searched now for DCT failure and not finding much definitive here. Can you point me in the right direction?
I am dealing with a battery issue now, or at least that’s what I’m hoping. See https://www.facebook.com/ceoscottevest/posts/pfbid02DXXUHqJTWdaSh2H25EYKNUsrmMARR3eNVqHWggKDZynUWL7yCH5r3L8Ky3ZEbc6tl

DCT failure modes are several. The most common and easily fixed is the speed sensor followed by the temperature sensors. Both of these problems can be fixed by Ferrari for about $10k.

The least common problem but one which will likely affect every box as they age is driveshaft seals. Some dealers will tell you that the driveshaft seals can’t be repaired/replaced as the gearbox needs to be split but repair kits exist and independents can do the work.

At the end of the day, nothing lasts forever and all gearboxes will fail over time given the heat and stress they are put under. The earliest DCTs are now 15 years old so the independent workshops are gaining experience and developing an expertise in how to repair rather than replace these expensive parts.

Does anyone know the status for the lawsuit against Ferrari that started this thread?

The court hearing was on the 16th of April and the verdict should have been made public a month later or so, so by now the lawsuit should have come to an end, but I haven't had any info on the verdict yet.

For the record, I have a 2017 Luso with over 45,000 miles on it on the original PTU. It is my daily driver. I drive it as it’s meant to be driven but not terribly aggressively in no circumstances, but enough to make me smile. I’m not sure the problem is as prevalent as people say it is. I have a full warranty and hoping it goes out Within a year otherwise, I will extend it one last time.

Hi everybody. I am considering to buy GT4Lusso V12 as my first Ferrari, but ater I read a lot about PTU issues i even started thinking about V8 to avoid this problem. By the way PTU failure depends on production year? Maybe 2019-2021 cars may not have this problem, what are your thoughts?

I have a 2017 Lusso with 52k Miles, of which 31k were added in last 20 months or so, and still on original PTU without any issues. I have never used Launch Control, which I believe may impact things. If you do need to deal with the PTU, I believe it is about a $10k fix, but I have the Power15 Warranty to deal with it for another year. I would get the v12 for sure

The issue is more common with FFs than with Lussos. But many Lussos still had it. At the end, it remains a small percentage of cars that are affected, so you shouldnt overthink it. And now, some very good permanent solutions have been found for about 10K, so just factor that in the purchase price.
IMO, getting the V8 instead of the V12 just for that is a mistake. The V12 is the piece de resistance of the car. It is such a masterpiece, I wouldnt imagine swapping it for a V8.

Thanks, I have the same thoughts, V8 is not bad at all, however V12 is definately a masterpiece. As for the solution of PTU reinforcement, I can order a 10K kit and fix the PTU at local service service and not waiting for something to go wrong, or I will have to dismantle PTU and ship it somewhere to be fixed?

It depends on the shop. Some will ship you a modified unit that you can install and you send them your old unit back.

Tried the V8 for my FL house where I don’t need the 4WD. Missing the sound of my V12 which is such a visceral part of the car.

Having said that, this is an opinion of a v12 lusso owner. If you don’t have one today and don’t need the 4WD , it’s such an amazing car. Test Drive it and make your own call.
