I'm looking for good classical albums to buy, various composers, or even a single composer. Easy on the Tchaikovsky and Beethoven though. Tchaikovsky is boring, and Beethoven when in various composer albums always inlcude Moonlight and Fur Elise. Good pieces from Ludwig in all, but they are boring from hearing it in every Classical CD. I've got an interest in Shostakivich, but I'm unsure of what album to get.

    Thanks,
    Jaime

That'd be Wagner, but certainly second the recommendation.

Off the top of my head, the "Brandenburg" Concerto's are always a must have. I'm a fan of Bach's organ works and a big follower of Mozart. Its only coincidence I'm born on the same day as Mozart 221 years later. (Sorry Jordan) :D I go easy on Tchaikovsky as well and prefer Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov.

I'll look at my collection tonight and pick out my favorites and what I think you would enjoy along with the orchestra info.

Sorry, that was from Wagner's Ring Cycle.

As for some good classical music, if you're looking for Beethoven, look into his 5th or 9th symphonies and any of his later string quartets.

As for Tchaikivsky, his Symphony 6 is always good.

Shostakovich's 5th Symphony is a good one, also his 'Leningrad' Sympony (#7 or 9?)

If you're into operas, look into Wagner's Tistan and Isolde or his Ring Cycle. Puccini is also a good composer of romantic era operas, including Tosca and others.

The Planets by Holst and The Four Seasons by Vivaldi are a couple of popular standards. btw, just about anything from Vivaldi makes great driving music, especially on a winding road when the leaves are changing.

Shostakovich's 5'th is great if you're feeling just a bit too cheery...

Well on a slightly more upbeat modern day version,
I like Bond, William Orbit and most recently Craig Armstrong. Excellent renditions of classical music with some nice modern twists.
Craig Armstrong has done some of the music on Top Gear. Slightly operatic in places with good piano pieces and classical to boot.

Totally agree. Symphony No 9 may take you a while to really enjoy it but I think it is the greatest work of his works, especially the 3rd movement. His violin concerto and piano concerto no 5 are great also. There are so many great classical music it really depends on your kinds you like.

would agree and repeat most below; here's my potpourri:

Bach - Brandenburg Concertos - for a different take on these, try Walter (now Wendy) Carlos' 'Switched on Bach' back when Moog synthesizers were brand new

Edvard Grieg - Peer Gynt Suite; weird story, great music you may recognize

Jean Sibelius - Finlandia (not the vodka)

Vivaldi - 4 Seasons - sounds great in a Ferrari

    Mozart - Requiem; Simply brilliant

Rossini - William Tell Overture (I'm a trumpet player so this was a dream come true to play this)

Beethovan - 9th Symphony; a high mark in the history of human achievement. Also the Emporer Piano Concerto - the best ever

Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue; I like Micheal Tillson Thomas' version with Gershwin's own piano roll playing the lead

Aaron Copland - Appalachian Spring and Rodeo

And just because I like it, Richard Rogers - Victory at Sea

There is so much good stuff

    What????

Nobody likes Ravel or Debussy? Listen to Le Mer sometime when you are on a sailboat! DeFalla (sp?)'s 3-Cornered Hat is another piece that you don't have to be hardcore to enjoy.

I've got Brandenburg, and thanks for looking into your collection.

Yes, the ninth is fantastic, considered his best. the 7th and 5th movts are great too. I was listening to the 7th earlier :)

I've got The Four Seasons, thanks! As far as Shasto's work, I've been meaning to dabble into it, but wasn't sure what to look for.

DeBussy's to mellow! Actually the last time I listened was while looking for a misfire on my car in the garage, good times(trouble shooting), but he's not for me.

Will do, I was going to the Library in the morning, I'll see if they have music to check out, which I didn't even know they did?

For home really. That's where I do most of my music listening.

Probably my all time fav is Faure Pavane Op 50. Ahh, it's fantastic. Maybe with these new suggestions however I might have a new fav? ;)

The only Opera I've heard that I like is Sym of Sorrowful Songs from Carmen.

    Good albums:
Best of the Millenium, 40 Greatest Classical Hits of all time
This is a great 2-CD collection with some of the more famous good works.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - Symphonic Rock
This is a very interesting CD with an orchestra playing modern rock songs such as Derek & the Dominoes's "Layla," my favorite song of all time.

    Movie Soundtracks
I love Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, Jurassic Park, Mission Impossible, James Bond, The Simpsons, and Spiderman themes.

However there are tons of things that are not on those CD's
here are a few off the top of my head:

Chopin Scherzo No. 1 (favorite performance by Rubinstein)
    Grieg Concerto
Richard Strauss - Don Juan!! I love this one

If you prefer heavier symphonic stuff: Bruckner symphonies are great, especially the later ones (#7, #8 and #9)

Anton Bruckner is good stuff, also Gustav Mahler's, particularly his 5th.
