Folks, In searching this board regarding replacing the speakers in my 348 (95 Spider) I noticed there are numerous posts but they seem to be from some time ago (most recent found was 2010). Has anyone recently replaced the door speakers on a 348 ? If so, please advise as what make/model etc.
I have been told these are 6 ½” oversized speakers with a max depth of 2 ½”. I want to retain the original door panel look so using a new speaker grill is not an option therefore the new type of speakers that have tweeters rise above the “rim” won’t work due to the original flush mount design.
Also thinking of replacing the Alpine (CDE 7820) with something newer.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I dont know whether this helps but the 348 speakers were also used on the 355 so you could do some research into speaker upgrades for a 355 (just thought there may be more info)

Jeff. Appreciate the input. I already did a search on “355” but many of the systems listed were shown as discontinued even back as little as a year. Speaker “fit” is my primary concern. I can find a nice head unit without too much problem I’m guessing but speakers ,, not so much!

If you check around i am sure there are a bunch of 6.5" low profile door speakers. I would look for higher end speakers & possibly with a non-paper cone (plastic/polyolefin/resin). Those materials can handle the vibrations better in door applications. Maybe Bose, Harmon Kardon or Altec Lansing (a blast from the past for us more experienced individuals!). You might want to get a few extra door hardware items from Daniel at Ricambi to make sure when you re-assemble that everything is perfect & sanitized. The clips rarely work well a 2nd time.

I too was planning to replace mine until I came accross some info on speaker repairs. If your speaker have died as a result of the foam insert around the cone dicenegrating (as mine has) then fear not, they can be cheaply and easily fixed.

ebay lists dozens of speaker foam insert repair kits for all sorts of speaker sizes and brand. Many kits are generic and a given size (and I have seen 6.5" advertised) fits many brands. And peanuts costwise..!! There are also lots of You tube 'how to fix it' video's to show you how to do it.

I for one plan to go down this track and fix my original Alpine speakers (I assume anyway since everything else is Alpine)

I would contact crutchfield. I will be putting a new deck and speakers in my 92 348tb. I removed my drivers side speaker when I had the door apart since it was shot. I know it is sacralege to want to listen to the radio while driving a Ferrari, but sometimes I don't think it is such a bad option.

I got some 6 1/2" Polks that sounded nice from Best Buy for $100. Model # DX1650. They fit fine for clearance issues. I think I had to drill 1 or 2 new small holes for the mounting screws. If you want reasonable bass though, you'll want a sub woofer.

Be a bit careful with your choice.

I installed speakers on mine last year and chose Infinity's. They were the right size (diameter), and they were the right depth (same as originals). BUT........

The speaker recess in the door actually has backing for the top half (I guess it's supposed to help bass). So although my new speakers were not too deep, and were the same diameter as the originals - the diameter was too big at the back to fit in this enclosed space. My door did not stay entirely original.....

    Dave,

Any chance they were Infinity Reference 6032si 6.5-Inch?

I don't want to spend a ton of $$ on the speakers because honestly, the radio is never on when I'm in the car alone. However, when the g/f gets in the car for longer trips we turn it on after awhile.

I may also try pnicholson's Polk solution.
