Whoever said is is a recession when your neighbor loses his job, it is a depression when you lose yours was dead wrong.

It is a recession when you lose your job, a depression when your wife loses hers.........

So, if anyone knows of a job for her, please let me know.

She is a marketing analyst, recently graduated from FAU, in an accelerated program, while working full time, in a dual bachelors program, with a 3.9GPA……..

If anyone knows a mid to large size law firm that is hiring - current gig gets me by, isn't where I want to be. Figured my celebrity from the Rothstein affair might leverage me the position I would prefer to have.

Sounds racist. We all know that doctors are in business to cut off people's feet and take out tonsils for no reason other than greed. Who are you kidding.

I wouldn't say double dip recession. More like this entire decade will be "lost" similar to what Japan did. They had a housing boom and bust just like us 20 years ago. The Nikkei peaked at like 40k (now it's 9k). They passed a bunch of stimulus plans and public works projects (new roads, paved riverbeds, airports, high speed trains, etc). Got them nowhere except a debt-to-GDP ratio of 2:1. Same as Zimbabwe and highest in the world. They've experienced deflation and crap growth since then.

    We will have the same.

In just six months, the largest tax hikes in the history of America will take effect. They will hit families and small businesses in three great waves on January 1, 2011:
(N.B. This version of the document contains even more tax hikes than the original version did)

First Wave: Expiration of 2001 and 2003 Tax Relief

In 2001 and 2003, the GOP Congress enacted several tax cuts for investors, small business owners, and families. These will all expire on January 1, 2011:

Personal income tax rates will rise. The top income tax rate will rise from 35 to 39.6 percent (this is also the rate at which two-thirds of small business profits are taxed). The lowest rate will rise from 10 to 15 percent. All the rates in between will also rise. Itemized deductions and personal exemptions will again phase out, which has the same mathematical effect as higher marginal tax rates. The full list of marginal rate hikes is below:

    - The 10% bracket rises to an expanded 15%
    - The 25% bracket rises to 28%
    - The 28% bracket rises to 31%
    - The 33% bracket rises to 36%
    - The 35% bracket rises to 39.6%

Higher taxes on marriage and family. The “marriage penalty” (narrower tax brackets for married couples) will return from the first dollar of income. The child tax credit will be cut in half from $1000 to $500 per child. The standard deduction will no longer be doubled for married couples relative to the single level. The dependent care and adoption tax credits will be cut.

The return of the Death Tax. This year, there is no death tax. For those dying on or after January 1 2011, there is a 55 percent top death tax rate on estates over $1 million. A person leaving behind two homes and a retirement account could easily pass along a death tax bill to their loved ones.

Higher tax rates on savers and investors. The capital gains tax will rise from 15 percent this year to 20 percent in 2011. The dividends tax will rise from 15 percent this year to 39.6 percent in 2011. These rates will rise another 3.8 percent in 2013.

Sorry to hear your news. I hope something comes up soon.

It's amazing to me just how terrible the job market is, especially in south Florida. We are quickly becoming a service nation where all the decent jobs are gone. Other than law and medicine how many high paying jobs are really left? Scary situation.

My good friend has been looking at teaching positions and was just offered 28k for a full time gig? What a joke!!! How can anyone live off of that? Colleges charge more and more and the job market pays less every year. Makes me wonder how anyone pays off their student loans.

Probably have their parents (with a credit score) help them out. That will just delay the inevitable when more people will start defaulting on loans that are directly or indirectly tied to student loans.

My company has been doing a fair amount of hiring lately and they have offices in Boca and Ft. Lauderdale. I'll send you a PM.
Or just go for a Master's to defer the loans for a couple years and hope to be in a better financial position by then. Perhaps not immediately, but the individual that now has a Master's will be elligible for higher paying jobs and will be able to repay the loans with a little more ease. That's my plan...although I'm planning to go for my Master's regardless of my financial position.

I've personally given up on the US education system and its cost. The only thing I'd pay for ever education-wise is a pre-professional degree (I'm starting 2nd year of MD right now). Even then, it's incredibly expensive and there's no guarantee what type of field you'll end up in. I feel bad for my classmates that have GradPLUS loans (8% or thereabouts...not subsidized) and tuition increases of 10% a year ($30k this yr). It's becoming a joke for the health care system.

Had I stayed in my old line of work and gone for a masters in econ, I would have had my job pay for it. I would never pay for a degree that wasn't pre-professional imo.

A couple of friends in DC (where I worked) have JDs and are out of work. Can't find crap. One of them is moving to Boston to live with his gf to reduce expenses. The other has a wife that supports the two.

That's what I'm doing now. I started working here a year ago and found out about the tuition reimbursement. I switched from UCF to Rollins and they're paying for most of my expenses. They will also pay for my Master's, so needless to say, I'll be here for a while (hopefully).

    Thanks Steph!!!

You can also get an unemployment deferment, and your maximum payments have to be less than 10% of your annual income. I don't know if that is gross or take home though.

Take a look at this nationwide map, county-by-county, that show the explosion in unemployment rates from January '07 to May '10. Hit the 'play' button on the map to watch it turn as dark as the freakin' economy is these days. Ya gotta go where the work is, the trouble is that it doesn't seem to be anywhere lately. Count me thankful I found my gig in SoCal, even though it is a world away from SoFla!

The masters degree is a smart move if your company pays for it.

I looked into a MA as well but by the time you factor in the outrageous cost I don't see where the ROI would be given the terrible pay down here. I'd be better served getting a PA or RN degree where there are guaranteed jobs that pay well.

Example: I would love to teach at the Art Inst. of Fort Lauderdale, even just part time. I am qualified in every way but I don't have the MA they require. Getting the MA would cost me @$50k but the position pays considerably less per year.

Sounds pretty good for only having to work part time, 8 months out of the year. Teaching is a slack profession.

I beg to differ. Teachers work harder than most for little pay and it is hardly a part time "slack profession". I hope that was just a poor attempt at humor. ;)
