Recently got my first Fcar which is a 308 GTBi '81 with 45k on it. My first inclination is to hit the basic stuff such as fluids, filters, spark plugs and wires, cap and rotor, as well as replacing worn or tired hoses.

But I am wondering about the after market items. I hear a lot about replacing the OEM fuse block with a Bridman. Unless you ask a Ftech or Fservice manager and then they tell not to worry about it until it becomes a problem. I like to be a little more proactive. It was also recommended to add relays to some of the major items such as power windows and head lights. I like the cover plates for the timing belts. Any other recommendations or ideas?

It depends on alot of things, do you want to keep it all original?

    Thanks Matt

Not necessarily. Its not 100% original as it is, and would rather make improvements then risk major damage due to a design flaw.

Get Birdman's fuse blocks first thing, that's what I did, and EVERYTHING works better. I also got the window accelerators. If you have the money, change all hoses, belts and anything that would be deteriorated with time over mileage, that's rubber and easily accessible gaskets. It's not that difficult and the driving experience will be more pleasureable while still listening for anything going wrong. All fluids is a given and get the proper oil filter, UFI. I've driven mine for 4 years with NO problems, although I do a lot or preventative maintenence mostly because I like to. These cars are meant to be driven and with proper maintenence are bulletproof. Mine's also a 2v 308GTBi congratulations on your new baby.

It WILL become a problem when you don't really want it to be. Replace them.

Other than that, I saw a nice picture on here several months ago with a 360 motor installed in someones 308. That looks like a nice upgrade. :)

I can't for the life on me figure out why the frickin' idiots used a thermoplastic as a fuseblock substrate.

Does the Birdman use glass fuses or the plastic push-in type?

Push-In blade type automotive fuses are called ATO/ATC. The Birdman Block uses AGC glass or ceramic fuses, the standard cylindrical fuses for 50 years in the US. A new fuseblock is a MUST HAVE as the old fuse block doesn't go out suddenly, it goes out gradually, and half the cars issues will be electrical.

Also replace all relays in the panel.

Concerns with headlight brightness and window speed will keep you busy AFTER the car is road worthy and reliable.

BUT FIRST - BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE - learn how to use the SEARCH function here including the Advanced Search. It's tricky. awkward, slow and lacks features but is necessary.
