any linksys router (WRT54GL is the most famous one they have), OR to make it exponentially easier to set-up I'd use an Apple TimeCapsule with buit-in hard drive (works very well with Macs/Macbooks/etc.)

    good luck..

Call Roto Rooter and wash your cares right down the drain :)

Seriously, always been a Linksys fan - WRT54G is my standard... works
as it should, very reliable, and not very expensive.

Do you just need wireless b/g capability, or do you have any devices that use Wireless-N? Most new laptops have cards capable of the N, which is significantly faster. Most devices will start to move towards N once they finalize the standard.

As for G routers... Linksys WRT54g/s routers with are generally considered the standard.

We personally have a Linksys WRT160n router, which has N capability. We have had it for a couple of months and it has been rock solid so far.

If you want dual-band capability, I hear the WRT610 is a good choice for that. The idea behind that is that you have two wireless networks running in tandem... one at 2.4ghz for the b/g spectrum, another at 5ghz for the N devices... this will improve reliability of both networks as it cuts down on interference.

Who is your Internet service provider? I ask because the Linksys is a great router but if you are on Verizon DSL you will need to change the MTU to 1492 to get the best throughput. Verizon's DSL is based upon LANe and can not handle a typical Ethernet frame with a MTU of 1500 without breaking it down to 1492. This means your DSL modem get congested. By setting your routers MTU to 1492 you will have a consistant frame rate from computer to the Verizon Internet entry point without contention.

I have the WRT54GL with a 3rd party firmware installed. Cool way to setup the router (I just track bandwidth usage/traffic) and offers tools you normally see in much more expensive routers!

Try the Apple Airport Extreme. It is more expensive but it works great. Just installed another one at my mother in laws. Worked great.

If you have an iPhone, you can use it as a modem/rooter.

Not sure if that's true. I read that on a couple forums.

I recently upgraded from my WRT54G to the WRT610N - same easy interface as the 54G, same stability, dual-band wireless N... banging fast with my MacBook Pro. If you don't need the N spec, The WRT54G/GS/etc... is a great little router.

There are only really two reasons why you should spend the money on 11n equipment today:

    - You need extra range. You have a large, multistory house and a normal (11g) router won't cover the entire area
    - You need device to device speed. 11g's max throughput is 20 Mbps so unless your Internet connection is faster than that (FIOS) then you don't need the extra speed. However, if you are running a media server wireless in your home, 11n is a good purchase.

    I use a 3Com Officeconnect Wireless a/b/g wireless router. It's a solid performer.
