I am looking for a PPI place in Charleston SC on a 1995 F355 with 35k mi. Should I have the nearest Ferrari dealer do it or can you recommend some else? It's my first Ferrari and would rAther avoid any rookie mistakes. Thanks

Stick with a Ferrari dealer. They know what to look for - for instance a pre-cat emission test will indicate if the valve guides are bad. You want to run, not walk away from this issue as a valve job is $12,000 - $15,000 at a dealer.

You may want to instruct the dealer to just perform the engine checks and not proceed if the engine has issues. This will save you ~$500. I did this and ended up paying only $300 for the engine tests (compression, leakdown, pre-cat, etc.)

When I lived in Charleston, I used to take my BMW to European Road and Racing on River's Ave. The number to the shop is (843) 747-1342. I used to see all sorts of Ferrari's, Lambo's, BMW's, Benz, etc. I've even seen them change a clutches out on the 355. I'm sure they will be able to do a PPI. The owners name is Karl Troy.

Cheny, I looked at that car (not in person) a few weeks back. Owner seemed nice and was selling it through a dealer which he was going to get a cut. Said he was second owner and the first was the pres of ferrari of denver or colorado, cant remember which. He had the major done I think, with the valves. I just had no time to get there and just started a second business so most of my time was spent. He has had the service done by a mechanic that he knows and is reputable, and was even willing to let me drive it down there myself and have the guy do it in front of me. He was hot and heavy for a while and has since trailed off. Was wondering what had happened to it. It is a gorgeous car and the miles would keep it from being a garage queen for me. Good luck with it I hope it turns out for you.

Thanks for the info. I feel better about the car knowing it is not some heap needing interminable amounts of work and money. Thanks again.

+1 Karl Troy is one super guy! I stopped by his shop while visiting in Charleston and had a great time talking cars and getting a tour of his shop and see some of his personal racing projects. I have heard nothing but the best comments from his customers.

I took everyone's advice on this thread and contacted Karl about the PPI. He did a fantastic job ! He had it brought to him the night before to check the cold start the next morning. He drove the car. He did not try to sell me a compression test unless it appeared necessary. And I got a very detailed three page report about it. He also called me no less than six times to verbally report on his findings. He was (painfully!) thorough in his explanations. Some of it was a bit lost on me :) and when the deal did not go through he looked into antother car for me for FREE! He loves cars that much. I felt I gained a trustworthy friend and will seek his opinion when I find the right F355.
