I've got a 98 550. I was in the dealership a few weeks ago talking with the manager. He said that at the current time the cost for "Classic.. certification" for 550s was the lowest of any Ferrari at $3,500 + maybe $1,500 for labor.
So the question I have is it worth the $5,000; ie. will I get a return of or on that investment?

If I was considering whether to buy your 550, or other modern Ferrari, I wouldn’t pay you an extra cent for that Red Book.

The condition of your car would solely determine the price I was willing to pay.

Instead, spend that five grand on new tires, a paint correction or dry-ice blasting if you want to add real value to your car.

Now, it’s a different story if we’re talking about classic Ferraris from the 1950-1970’s…the Red Bank adds real value in these cases.

Not one cent. And that is from someone who has a car with a red book. It is worthless for later cars and the dealers are under a lot of pressure to sell them.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts. And as for waiting for a 550 to be classic, I'm not going to live long enough.

Speaking just for myself, If I were in the market for a 550 (and I really enjoy driving that model) I would pass on yours if you marked it up by $5000 over market value for that Red Book. You can keep that.

Don’t fall for it. Red book is only worth it on vintage Ferraris, where history, specifications and originality were not as well documented nor easily traceable.

In the UK at least, it adds zero value to a modern classic Ferrari.

Other than the pedigree (or illusion of such) does it place any restrictions on how you use your car? Or just simply how its maintained and by who?

No restrictions. I guess I am puzzled by why would there would be any.

It is simply a formal attestation in a time and place that the car meets factory specification.

Even that is in serious and legitimate doubt by many.

Doesn't the classique (or how its spelled) replace a lot of the know failure parts and returns every aftermarket part to OEM? Pretty sure the full program is like 15K plus depending on what they find.. Jay Emm did it to the 550

Mostly they bend you over and extract money from your bank account.

Except for the Red Book they offer no product or service that cannot be better performed for less money by a variety of American companies.

Their reproduced parts are all made by contractors and can be purchased for a fraction of the price. In a great many ways they are just middlemen.

I'm kind of pissed I got my 355 done 2-3 years ago at peak pricing, I'm hearing everyone getting much cheaper Classiches now.

More pressure on dealers to sell. Lots of discounting going on to meet quotas. Price was roughly 50/50 Dealer/Ferrari. Ferrari is turning up the heat in several directions.

When I did mine main Classiche guy in US, needed a car for big event to promote program and wanted good clean car that would sail through. They waived the dealer fee. Low friends in high places.

The Gallardo was amazing for that... almost all parts were the same as the 2.0T vw/audis

I had similar deal 328 when the dealer needed to do their first one as practice. 355 wasn't so lucky, but the average between the two was still good. :D
