We just got back from the Red Bull Air Races in San Diego. This was my third year and I gotta say I was more impressed this year with the competitiveness of the pilots. Yesterday, in the quarterfinals, 3 pilots were disqualified for pulling too many Gs. The limit is 12 Gs and there is telemetry on each plane which monitors forces on the aircraft. Viloations ( one for 12.1) disqualifies you immediately.
Incredible flying and a spectacular event. I believe they are in Windsor/Ontario in the middle of June. I highly recommend going to witness if you are in that part of the country.

John, have you ever done Reno Air Races? I wonder how it compares. Solo and more maneuvers vs. wing to wing action. My call is to attend both.

Never been to Reno but would love to go. Wing to wing would be exciting but impossible with the RBAR format. The pylons are too close together.. I think the Reno event is more about speed whereas RBAR is more precise control through the pylons ( some at knife edge, some horizontal). I do know that most of the RBAR pilots ( except for the phenom 25 year old Canadian McLeod) are former World Acrobatic Champs.
