We had 6 35mm cameras up until this year, we put up 8 new ones and replaced the 35 with digital--so all ours down here are digitasl.

Yes you can----it does defeat the purpose of the cameras. Im just saying that is a way to beat them..If someone wanted to. But just a tad over that speed and FLASH---your toast...

I see a slight flaw with that study just based on some quick logic.

The study was done with people not aware that the yellow would last longer. Now, if everyone knew that most every yellow light were, say, 5 seconds long, then people would judge how exactly to time it right to beat the red.

But, the fact that all lights are different isn't an accident, in my opinion. By each time interval being different/light, a driver has to assume that the yellow is quick, making the driver likely to stop.

    Does that make any sense?

We had a couple of those up here in Canada aswell. I lived in the same area for almost 20 years, and at the intersetion where they put the camera, I could time the yellow light and the length of the red. As soon as they installed the camera the length of the yellow light was faster by almost 2 seconds. It was a scam pure and simple. The camera has be removed since.

The obstuction dropped from a concrete truck that took out my $200 snow tire is still sitting on Rt1 (and unmarked) a month after I told the town about it, there are an astounding number of concrete intersections on asphalt roads in the DC area, the traffic lights are set all wrong for traffic flow, the telegraph road interchange could be grounds for criminal indictment, and I've never seen as many blind merges in the rest of the world combined as I've seen in the DC area.

What part of this makes it seem like improving traffic safety is any kind of priority around here?

You should never out-source traffic management to a company heavily invested in the auto salvage business. ;)

No, actually he is not....I just attended a city council meeting proposing installing in the city in which I reside. The proposal does not require the city to pay for installation. Here's an article for another city proposing to do the same....

McKinney supports plan for traffic-camera system
Police to consider bids; city hopes to nab red-light runners

12:00 AM CST on Tuesday, March 7, 2006
By MIKE JACKSON / The Dallas Morning News

McKINNEY – The city soon will be the next to install cameras at intersections to catch and fine red-light runners.

Police got the go-ahead from the City Council on Monday to shop for a company that would put up cameras at busy intersections.

"I would say to you, if we can save a life or prevent injury, then I think it's worth it," said Mayor Bill Whitfield told council members.

McKinney would join several other North Texas cities – including Garland, Plano and Richardson – that have installed the cameras. Frisco also plans to use them.

Police Chief Doug Kowalski told City Council members Monday night that cameras in those cities and others across the nation have helped reduce crashes. The cameras, he said, deterred drivers from hitting the gas instead of the brakes when they approached red lights.

Red-light running is one of the top 10 causes of traffic accidents in the nation, Chief Kowalski said. Intersection crashes account for 50 percent of all reported accidents and 22 percent of all injuries nationwide. But cities that use cameras report a decrease of 45 percent to 65 percent in the number of red-light violations.

"You target intersections that have high volumes of traffic," Chief Kowalski said.

Chief Kowalski said it would take at least a month to collect and begin considering bids from companies for the cameras and to work out contract details. Police would have to return to the City Council for formal approval.

Several North Texas cities have signed on with Redflex Traffic Systems, an Arizona-based company. Redflex and those cities share the fines.

Cameras would be installed at no cost to McKinney, Chief Kowalski said. The city could share the fines in a possible 50-50 split.
