Pretty sure that is a big 'ol POS! I talked to the guy (email I think only) and he is willing to take $17,600 for it I think he said. It needs a "fuel injection service"...yea... maybe a fuel injection system REPLACEMENT! It has 56k miles on it, the 66k was incorrect so I was told.

Look at those VERY POOR pics carefully (especially of the interior) and you will see that is NOT a nice car!

Doesn't look THAT bad. It does have a few things going for it.

1 - It's red, and that's decently rare. Some people are looking for red, so I posted it.
2 - Notice that it hasn't been drilled for US-spec side markers. Meaning, it's unmolested both front and rear. That is rare in and of itself.

And what exactly is a fuel injection service? New O2 sensors? :) I mean really...it's just Bosch L-Jetronic (Or it is K-Jet?) either way, the injection system isn't rocket science. If that's what's wrong anyway.....

I think if you want a red automatic, then one should at least give the car a chance.

Doesn't look too bad. Needs a good service, interior Leatheriquing, and tidy up of some cosmetics. Maybe $7-8k worth of work.

Parts cars with hail damage or engine in parts sell for 15K.
This car which does not look that bad can not bring 18K? maybe the seller is using the wrong tack, maybe he should advertise it as a parts car?

I might be missing something here, but weren't all 400i's equipped with a V12 and not V8 as advertised in the link above ?

<laughing> I wondered who else would catch that.
But just to keep you up to speed Mike the V8 was standard only on 1984 cars, the V12 was a special order. Most of us own '84 cars with the special order engine. We get an extra $5k when we sell them because of that :D

oh sheesh, sometimes I just crack myself up. (well, maybe I'm just a crackpot)

Well, Brian, you just jump on in there and get that bad boy and then you can tell us EXACTLY how much it costs to make it run properly and look decent. When you have spent $35k on a car that is now worth $22k I'll buy it from you... ;)

Hi, I had to deal with some injection issues and I would'nt qualify this as simple. I would'nt say it is a science neither.
By the way, it is K.

Bah, K-Jet. My 84 Rabbit GTI had K-Jet. How hard could it have possibly been? :)

I think the problem is the tolerances are so small that once they go out it is difficult to repair and most shops won't touch them. There may be places you can send them off to, but that takes time and it is ALWAYS expensive. I don't know this from personal experience just what I have heard. I think the early 928's use K-jet too. Isn't that the same thing as CIS??? 928's have used all sorts of Bosch injection systems over the years... K, L, etc. etc.

Maybe you guys need better monitors too, or maybe I do, but I suspect that most of the main leather in that car is so shot it would need replacing and the paint just does not look good in the photos I have seen and there are some places that looked very suspect to me of having been worked on or needing to be worked on. I had a contact in GB who had friends in CA that were supposed to look at the car for me but never did and now don't return emails, so I just figured they liked it as a parts car or a project car and bought it themselves, but I guess not since it is still showing up as a listing.

Maybe someone will get it from this list and we will learn the real truth about it. The car is the color combination that I am most interested in and I would love to have it if it checked out, but I just can't imagine that it will... Call me a skeptic on this one!

No problem being a skeptic. With these cars you have to be. But people get so worked up over little stories turning into nightmares that they forget that sometimes the little stories are just that, little stories. My point was simply, if you want an automatic red on tan, it's worth at least checking out....and the lack of side markers is nice.

Regarding the interior, I've never seen this vintage of tan interior look good. Part of the reason I dislike tan, especially Ferrari tan. It just looks dirty...although some would call it patina.

Given what I've seen of other Ferrari tan interiors from this vintage, I don't think this car looks half-bad...not worse than others I've seen. Certainly some cleaning and conditioning...maybe even a re-dye, but the interior is far from knackered...and on my monitor, it actually doesn't look half bad.

Point is, try to get someone to see the car in person.

    Brian,

Good points all! I have tried to get someone in the car to no avail... No biggie. As I said I am not quite ready to buy at this point anyway... I need to save some $$$$$ and buy at the end of the year. I would still LOVE to have someone who knows the cars (or at least Ferrari's in general) check it out and report back...

    Best,
    James

The car looks as though it has been sitting for a while, possibly outside. There is really nothing to go on about the overall condition aside from the poor quality pictures, but the cosmetic condition doesn't look horrible at all. There is absolutely no information of value about the mechanical or structural condition. The ad writer is basically clueless about the car "V8", "runs and drives great" but needs fuel injection service. This is a car that must be seen in person by someone familiar with the model before any conclusions about its value can be made. It could be worth $20K or it could be worth $5K, or anywhere in between, depending on the actual condition.

The Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection (2 systems, one for each bank of cylinders) actually was very commonly fitted on many cars during the early 1980's, including BMW and Mercedes. In my experience, it is fairly reliable and shouldn't pose too many issues that can't be solved by a competent mechanic.

It would be interesting to see the "service records" to get an idea about the mechanical condition. My guess is that there are a lot of deferred maintenance issues that will be uncovered in a thorough PPI.

    Anyone know the s/n?

    John

I called and asked today John. The car is stored offsite. If he shares it I'll post it here.
