If it comes with maintanance records and the 30k service was done I would say it is a good price for the mileage. Checked Carfax for you and car is clean. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars-Trucks___F1-Berlinetta-ONLY-6062-miles_W0QQitemZ280249725125QQddnZCarsQ20Q26Q20TrucksQQddiZ2282QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item280249725125&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C65%3A10&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245.l1318

ad says it's a '98. so if the car has accumulated only 40 miles since its last major service, but 3.5 years has passed, is it due for another major?

    *can of worms just opened*

IMO I would budget the major into the purchase price and have it done before i picked up the car, then at least its all done and you can actually drive the car for the next 3-4-5 years.

If its only done 40 miles in over 3 years i would expect there to be more than the normal "major" parts involved to get this up to standard.

That's why you have to check records thoroughly it could have mileage roll back, you never know. See who serviced the car. I can't imagine this car was sitting in a garage some place collecting dust. 40 miles in 3 years yes it would need 30k service. Not driving the car is worse.
