A variation of the speculated 'red tyre rule' will be implemented in Formula One this year.

To coincide with Bridgestone's new era as sole supplier, the Japanese company must differentiate the appearance of the 'hard' and 'soft' options at each race, after the F1 Commission and World Motor Sport Council implemented an update to the sporting rules.

In the Champ Car World Series, Bridgestone colour the tyre walls red so that spectators can clearly determine the compound in use, but it is not yet clear how the tyres will be distinguished for F1.

The new sporting regulation was amended "with the unanimous agreement of all competing teams" in the past days, the FIA said.

    Subsection 4 of Article 25.
1 B now reads: "(Each tyre specification) must be of one homogenous compound and visibly distinguishable from one another when a car is on the track."

Similarly, another new rule tweak requires that airbox cameras be coloured either fluorescent red or yellow in 2007 so that spectators can distinguish between each team's two drivers.

When are they gonna add rocket launchers and the ability to spill oil slicks and spikes on the track?

    I like this rule.

I would also welcome telemetry directly to the TV stations and fans so we'd know for instance how much fuel each car has at any given time. The whole 2 vs 3 tank stop guessing game drives me nuts. Put your cards on the table when the red lights go out.

Me too. At least in this form. I never liked CART's version, with the one set of "special" tires. At least this is more for recognition purposes.

I like the sound of this, the more info that we can get about the cars on track the more entertaining it is IMO. Unfortunately Andreas I don't think we'll be getting full telemetry anytime soon since I'm pretty sure most of the teams have no intentions of letting anyone in on that information.

You're right about that. If it is up to the teams, we'll always be left in the dark, after all sharing information gives the competition an advantage.

But remember the silly "cubicle walls" they used to put up in front of the garages to prevent "spy fotos"? Well, Bernie said "enough with this" and banned them. End of story. All it takes is an act of God, err Bernie and we could have all the telemetry we want on TV.

Radio communication used to be scrambled, now they had to open it. Who knows, maybe F1 can learn a couple of pages out of the NASCAR book. What's next? Remotely controlled cameras on the rear wings? I'd welcome it.

I thought some teams including Ferrari still had their radio signals encoded? If not when I do eventually make it to a GP I'd be willing to fork over the money for a scanner to listen during the race.

true, but i'd rather if they have scrap friday tests, and have a meet-the-fans sessions. fans should be given a chance to meet the drivers, signatures, photos, etc.

i think fans should also eb allowed in the pits, of course, with security, to watch how the teams setup cars and garages for the upcoming race.

i think F1 is the only sport where fans get extremely mininal exposure and contact with the teams and drivers. i'm pretty sure if Bernie can find a solution here, attendance and race following will be increased.

    I agree +1 for a good rule.

However what I like even more is that F1 management is looking at the sports from its entertainment perspective and making some moves to create a more enjoyable product for spectators (differentiating drivers/tyre colouring) only adds for the spectators and doesn't take away from the competition.

Hopefully they can continue to improve things for fans with some of the things mentioned above.

    Cheers!

You can, just buy a ticket with the Ferrari F1 club. Me and my son did it and loved it. We got to meet drivers and walk through the pits and look at all the cars close up. It just comes at a hefty price!

I think they need to add a popup window on the TV screen that tells when the drivers have to take a dump...

I thought the red and black camera's did that. Red for #1 driver, black for #2 driver.

While I agree with you, if you ask Bernie he'd say not true: You get what you pay for. If you cough up $ 5k, you'll get a VIP ticket for the paddock and you get to hang with the drivers.

To Bernie the folks at the track are just decorum. F1's audience is on TV.

yes, but it costs a bomb here to but those VIP passes, due to the exchange rate. a grandstand tic here costs over RM1000 ( about US 350 ), which is more than i earn in a month ;)

well, regarding the fan-driver thing, lets face the fact that most of us gets to see them just thru a fence, during parade and during the race.

Why do people who usually drive on the wrong side of the road (left) call it TYRE?

And why do people who usually drive in the right side of the road (right of course..right is right) call it TIRE? :)
