Have correct paint to refinish cam covers on 348. Would like to solicit advice as to best sealant to use when replacing covers on new gaskets. Thanks in advance.
No sealant to use on the cam cover gaskets however I did provide a small smear of sealant around the vulnerable oil seals, but only on the bottom edge. If its just the covers and your not removing the cams / oil seals, I wouldn't use any. I used Bentley CAF1 but Im sure you have alternatives over there.
Out of curiosity, what is the correct paint? The wrinkle pattern is so specific on the covers with those little squiggly lines running everywhere...
There is a wrinkle powder coat that looks great on the cam covers and lasts longer than most paints. Sorry, but I don't know the manufacturer or part number, but a powder coater familiar with Ferraris should be able to help you.
I'm an engineer, and there's a lot of times where I need info on something that I can't find online. I've found a lot of times just randomly phoning a manufacturer in the industry eventually connects you with a person who will answer your question. I feel like this is one of those things where if you called the right people at Ferrari and asked politely eventually someone would forward your question to the right person and they would tell you the correct paint. Maybe I should try and see what happens.....
I recently painted my cam covers using the HB Body S.A. (Greece) spray paint "Texture Engine Paint Ferrari Red". It does look very much like Roso Corsa and many consider it the best choice for DIY. Looks pretty good; it is grainy, not wrinkly. Nice colour and grain. But does it really matter what exactly red tone they are...and the air box has yet to come... Image Unavailable, Please Login
question is what paint do we use here that's readily available in the states. The paint he bought is from greece
I'm quite sure that I wouldn't be able to identify slight differences in color, even if the two cars were sitting side-by-side. So as long as it's not pink or maroon, I agree, although I'd like to get as close as possible for originality's sake. Your cam covers look fantastic! They really dress up the engine compartment. Great work!
This paint has been approved by Ferrari, see the Ref. No. (the shop owner told me this, when I was considering whether to buy one or three cans). Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Here's something interesting. I was in a shop at work today and noticed that this old Kennedy toolbox had almost the exact correct finish on it to match the OEM 348 valve covers. The color was perhaps a little too "tomoto-ey" red but the wrinkle pattern was almost spot on. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
