I'm sure there have been threads but I can't seem to find them. I'm pulling the dash in the 330 GTC to refinish it. The veneers are intact, but the color is uneven and the old finish is shot. I'll have to strip and probably stain. Photos would be an enormous help--I'm concerned about color but especially about gloss and the extent to which the grain showed when original--was it a glass-smooth finish or did it show grain?

    Thanks as always--in advance

The wood is most likely European walnut, and there was variation from car to car. It was a smooth, but not gloss finish, very hard to remove. My guess is that the wood product came from the local gun-making traditions being some sort of penetrating oil with a varnish on top. After sanding to P220 grit, I used a water based analinie dye in a brown shade to return a little color to my fairly light original wood. After drying, I finished it with several coats of paste varnish bringing it to a semi-gloss finish. Looks very nice. There was considerable variation in these vintage cars so I wouldn't worry too much about a "production standard".

I bet there was less variation then you would think. And these days we just have a lot of messed with cars to try to figure out what it used to look like. The real answer is that unless you're doing the work yourself the person refinishing the dash (and doing other stuff on your car) should have some experience with Ferraris. I think taking these cars to random repair shops can totally screw you up in a high percentage of the time. Been there, etc.

    Welcome!

Do you still own the car?

We can get you into our Owner's Section, if so.......enter it into your profile and thanks for helping him out.
