I have a 1986 328 GTS car that had the front "lip spoiler" repainted with some sort of wrinkle paint or after market undercoating spray when I purchased it. It had not been prep'ed properly and was chipping off. I stripped the old finish and am ready to repaint.
Is the factory finish on a front "lip spoiler" regular black paint? The lower rocker panels under the side of my car and under the rear fenders is painted with a "textured" black paint or finish that looks to be original. This finish looks different than what was on the "lip spoiler". Is what's on the lower sides an original finish or aftermarket? I'm thinking I might have my "lip spoiler" sprayed with Rhino Lining (the stuff they use on pick-up beds) which would certainly be more durable then paint.
What is original and what isn't? Any other ideas regarding refinishing the "lip spoiler"? Thanks.

It's hard to tell from a verbal description what kind of texture you actually have. I'd tend to agree that the rocker panel texture is probably OEM unless you have reason to believe that the entire car was resprayed.

The texture is a chip resistant finish that goes on under the paint. It's sometimes called 'rocker schutz'. It's available in several forms, both aerosol cans & with special spray attachments. Its intended to be both tough and to remain elastic enough for rocks to bounce off w/o chiping the paint or denting it. It's tough stuff, a real bear to strip off as it likes to gum up even 80 grit gold paper.

I'm about to apply it to my 308 Euro spoiler, hopefully this weekend.

I've got a can each of SEM testure finish (mild texture) and SEM chip guard (more distinct texture). I'm going to try both on a couple of sheets of metal to see which most closely matches the OEM texture, & to get a feel as to how to apply it. The body shop supply believed that the texture finish would probably be the best match, but again it was based on my verbal description, not seeing the actual finish.

3M makes it in 3 degrees of texture.

    Good luck!!!

on my '89 328, krylon flat black spray paint. Dunno if that's what people had been using before I got the car, but it matched right up.
