I'm going to be leasing a new BMW here in CA next week some time. I'll be then driving it to my home in UT about a week later. It will stay there most of the year and will be registered and insured there.

I'm a bit confused about how this process would work. If I'm required to register in CA when taking delivery then obviously I'm paying registration fees for one year to only be in use a few weeks at most, then pay UT reg fees at that point. Waste of probably $400-500. Use tax is obviously monthly for the time of the lease so if pay one month of CA vs. UT tax it's pretty negligible. But I would like to avoid paying reg fees in CA if possible. Is there a way to do a temp registration/one trip permit or other?

My other question is UT related but probably applies to other states. UT DMV says they need the original title sent to them so they can transfer it as well. I guess until that happens I'd have to keep reg active in CA, I couldn't do the transfer until a UT title is created. If that's the case it could cause some insurance issues, maybe other issues. Does this make sense? I already transferred two cars(about 30K miles on them and had been CA reg a few years) CA to UT and at least one I know and probably both did not have title transferred to UT, they both have CA title(lien holder held). Why would this situation be any different?

I don't know about the title part but on the registration, my understanding is that if you are purchasing from a dealer in CA they will want to register in in CA unless you make arrangements to have the car shipped out of state directly from the dealer by a registered car carrier company. If you want to take possession and drive it off the lot, CA wants their registration and taxes.

Do yourself a favor and lease it in Utah. There is no worse state than Ca
