Regular production 12-cylinder mid-engine Ferrari, should they make such a beast?

    Hello. I wonder if there are those of you out there, like myself, who lament the loss of a regular production mid-engined 12 cylinder Ferrari? I am not talking about the special editions like the F50 or Enzo, but a car like the Testarossa was. Right now, we only have 1 mid-engined car, the F430 and 3 regular production front-engined cars. Ferrari, IMHO, has transformed from being a maker of exotic cars to one that produces cars that belong more in the "luxury GT" category. There is just something about a 12 cylinder Ferrari and the exotic designs that are only possible with a mid-engined configuration. What are your opinions on this?

    PS. Of course Ferrari should offer a regular manual gearbox for such a car in addition to the "floppy paddle" which is unfortunately innevitable.

    I would love such a car... the only thing I would like more is the means to purchase such a car when/if were made!

    There is a certain balance to the handling and design that only seems possible with the mid-engine configuration.

    Snap up the mid 12 cylinders while you can: it will not be seen again unless some small run exotic tribute car for collectors resurecting some old name from the past....kind of narrow on the name selcections.

    As nice as it would be to see a mid engine v12 come out of ferrari, its just not practical with the rising cost of fuel and if they did do it, it would only appeal to such a small market segment that it wouldnt be sustainable as a regular production car.
    The other side is of coarse, why should ferrari be practical and why would someone who could afford such a car worry about the cost of fuel.
    I still stand by the fact that it would only appeal to such a small segment that it wouldnt be sustainable for regular production, but i would like to be proven wrong.

    1. Mid engine V8
    2. Mid engine V12
    3. Front engine V8
    4. Front engine V12

    Assuming that the mid and front engine V8s are the same price, and the mid and front engine V12s are the same price.

    Would love to see another mid-12 production Fcar!! V or Boxer. I always prefer normally-aspirated to turbo or supercharger. But I'm sure it will never happen... unfortunately. :(

    Ferraris current production cars are mid-engine! The front mounted cars are still mid-engine since the engine sits behind the front wheels...

    Front-mid or rear-mid.

    Even most middle engines aren't. If they were, you'd have nowhere to sit.

    Tim, for example the 599 is listed as a front mounted mid-engine car...

    The 599 is no more "mid-engined" than a 'Vette.

    This sounds like nothing more than a new-fangled marketing gimmick. Say it's mid-engined, then it is, B.S.

    If the engine is in front of the driver, it's "front-engine".

    If the engine is in the back (behind the transaxle like a VW or Porsche), it's "rear-engine".

    If the engine is behind the driver and ahead of (or on top of) the transaxle, it's "mid-engine".

    I would suggest that the F of today is not the F of just 15 years ago. They don't need to build a "race car for street" (like a mid12) on a production basis. They have comfortably settled into a three platform strategy:

    Front 12s: Great GTs that can carry stuff in the trunk.
    Mid 8s: Excellent sports cars and tweakable to formidable track cars.
    Exotics: Every 6 years or so, they will take current F1 tech and somehow deploy it as a street car. This is how they periodically connect F1 and the high end race car motif to the retail market.

    Nonwithstanding the front 8 concept that is designed to go after the Mercedes SL and BMW 6 series market....
