I think you are both right. Definitely tons of lobbying involved in writing the laws (this is true of literally everything in the US), and there are benefits to having at least some cursory car inspections. My brother lives in Florida, and he is about as anti-regulation as you get -- I was just there and was very surprised to hear him say that he wished they would reinstate car inspections. I asked him why and he said there are just a bunch of cars that have no business being on the road. He has modded cars and is the last guy to want inspections, but he sees the issues with completely eliminating them.

There are few things in NJ that are "good", but their inspection process is pretty good. They have state facilities that doesn't have long lines (at least the one I go to), it's simple, the people are generally nice, and it's "free" (paid for by my taxes of course). I prefer a state facility over private (rare to say that) -- my sister goes to private in NY and they rip her off frequently.

I just did a search of those studies. Actually, the facts/studies are missing the point. It is not whether there are more or less accidents in states with/without inspections. The question that should be asked is when there is an accident, was it caused by faulty brakes, threadbare tires, faulty brake lights, no headlights, faulty steering linkage, etc. A crash caused by a drunk, or excessive speed or texting has nothing to do with the car's equipment, but these are all lumped into these studies.

I'll bet Massachusetts even with its insane inspection requirements is high in crash rates. I'd guess the reason is two fold, the traffic is extremely congested here and a certain population of Mass. drivers are incompetent. However, one reason not a factor is faulty equipment.

To me, the facts matter are what you experience directly. He pointed out a few cars when I was in Florida, he's not wrong. Also trucks that are jacked up to insane levels at not safe. Some of his specialty cars have been modded enough to be concerned about not passing inspection -- if he still wants inspections, it's a very real concern.

I don't agree with @Nospinzone that it is decoupled from drunk driving incidents -- when people are drunk, and they have a light out, or the car has other issues, it significantly compounds their likelihood of having an accident. If a drunk is dangerous in a perfect car (and they are), they are probably 3x more dangerous with poor lighting.

I no longer take my exotics to the NJ state inspection, I go to a private European car place in Ocean NJ and pay about $70. The last time I took my GT3 in to the state place, a 300+lb worker tried fitting in my standard size GT3 cup seats and I heard them creaking. Luckily nothing cracked but I was scared those seats were about 22k for a pair.

Couldn't believe the state inspection requirement for registering. Included a ton of invasive operations and test driving. Then went to a shop that did the inspections for Ferrari owners. The longest part of the inspection was watching them try to get the dash to show mileage. The brake inspection literally consisted of them looking through the wheel openings and say 'yup, it has brakes' and then laughing. Seemed well practiced.

After the local Discount Tire ruining one of my previous tires as mentioned on the previous page, I went to a specialty shop that deals in more premium stuff an hour away to get my new tires mounted on my new forged wheels. They had a "no touch" machine machine there so no chance of damaging anything. Ended up costing a whopping $207 out the door, more than I eve paid for a mount and balance, but I know it wasn't being done by a newly trained crackheads making 8 bucks an hour.
