    Hi:
I'm a new old Ferrari (the car, not necessarily me!) wanna be owner. I have lots of experience with maintenance intensive 1950s motorcycles, but not with Ferraris. I'm looking very hard at a 365 GT 2+2 that seems to be in very good cosmetic and mechanical condition (lots of display awards), but I want it for a driver - not daily, but as often as reasonable, say 2-3K miles a year. In any case, I would like to know what problems are likely to occur in this model. I already know about the second gear synchro and the load leveling Koni dampers on the rear. What other problems are likely to occur? What has been the experience of other owners?

    Thanks in advance!
    Vin

Check Ferrari Life, their Buyers Guide for the Queen was written by Zac Dugger, Brian Phillips and others, who collectively posess a huge base of experience with that model, M

Vincent - once set up properly, the queen mother is meant to be driven long distances on the highway. f-chatters Tom Kizer and Mark Dempsey have each put thousands of miles in long distance trips on their queen mothers. Another new owner just picked up his QM in Phoeniz last week and drove it to its new home in San Francisco. I have put my fair share of miles on mine with no problems. It is the ultimate grand touring car. (see www.tomyang.net for the story).

    ps, you have a PM.

    Vin,

If you have experience with motorcycles, an early Ferrari will be a piece of cake, just multipled into twelve cylinders.

For what it's worth, think of it this way: A forty-year old Chevy probably wouldn't be a very reliable car, so why would the Queen Mother of Deferred Maintenance be any better? "Be prepared."

sounds like the type of driving you plan is optimal.

The 2cam cars are easy to work on, have few quirks and if properly maintained produce no unpleasant suprises.

Re sincros, shift 1st to third 2-3 miles till trans warms up and shift gears 1st to neutral to second, etc and the sincros will last a long time. I know of no replacements for self leveling shocks, and they are the luck of the draw. My C4 has the originals still.
