How many of you remember these guys? Especially you southern Californians who really love your surfing. This was one of the earliest of the Surf Music groups and did a lot of songs that became really popular and have become classics of that era.

Watch the video all the way through, Theme from Hawaii 5-0, Pipeline and Wipeout.

This was a get back together concert filmed in 1986. The Ventures first formed in the early 60's

And then in 2004, 40 years after they formed, still sounding super. Look at how easily it seems like Nookie Edwards is playing.

You might get an arguement from surf guitar purists calling the Ventures a surf music group. They did have a few songs that fell into the "surf" genre, but most of their songs were not considered surf music. (By the way, this is from the band themselves, as they never considered their music surf music).

I heard them say that in an interview but when I was 14 their Surfing album was the first album I purchased after receiving my first paycheck from my first job. It made a lasting impression with me as far as my first experience of them. I know they were not primarily surf type music but certainly did some good ones. Pipeline is a classic and is considered by many to be the "Surfing National Anthem". Nokie Edwards playing style with the way he could twists notes by changing the tuning knob while holding a note and coming back in tune gave some unique sounds.

The last I could find of them performing was in 2004. Does anyone know if they are still doing anything or have all of them turned it in? It looks as if in 2004 they were using a different drummer as he appeared to be in his 30's while the rest of the guys have to be about 70 by now.

I met Nokie at a small bar in Big Spring, Texas back about 1984. They had come to town to play a concert and less than 100 people showed up so the promoter cancelled the concert. The small bar I was at had bands play and had a small dancefloor and a bandstand only large enough for a trapset and maybe three guitarists/keyboard/singers. Nokie came in and took the seat at the bar next to me. I thought I recognized him from the pictures I had seen but thought, "can't be, what would he be doing here"? I started talking to him and he told me about the concert, which had not been advertised or I would have been there. He said that it was actually a relief to have the night off as they were on tour and he was pretty tired of the travel. He drank one drink, was invited by the band to come up and play with them. He joined in for three songs, came back to the bar and had another drink and then retired for the night about 11:30. He was a genuinely nice guy that night. Very soft spoken and not into himself at all. He even complimented on the band that was playing that night, Tommy somebody. They played a song called "Mabel Murphy" where Tommy rolled his jeans up to his knees, put on a mariachi hat and played a trombone. It was a hilarious song and I remember Nokie laughing out loud as they performed it. It was a cool night.

I just found a clip from WFAAC channel 8 in Dallas, at his 70th birthday in 2005. They too have tied Nokie and the Ventures to surf music very heavily. But Nokie admits, "I don't even swim". Enjoy

Not the Ventures, but I saw Dick Dale when he played at the Continental Club here in Houston about 5 years ago. Wiki stated that he had cancer surgery again this past year. He is 71.

Brings back a lot of memories! Many times, I wish I could go back in time..........

Driving my 409, then my E-Types and then my 1st Ferrari and listening to them on the radio. Those were good times, and petrol was 19 pennies a gallon.

I saw Dick Dale in Houston a couple years ago too at some little bar out in Cypress. That dude is awesome! I was recently looking to see when he's going to come around again and saw he has rectal cancer and is currently going through treatment. His website gives updates I think.

The Ventures were just inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame. They played at the ceremony, and, yes, they are getting old, but still play great. As a long time surf music fan I recently started replacing some of my lost surf LP's with CD's and I have found a thriving surf music sub culture that are most willing to help with locating hard to find discs. SurfGuitar101.com is the place to get info on music, gear and general chat.

I remember them well, in fact I owned some of the cars mentioned when the songs debut.

It was a sad day in 66' when Jan, of Jan & Dean, had the tragic accident in his Stingray. Another 'day when the music died'.

Yeah, when you mentioned the 409 and the E-type I had to post 409 by the Beach Boys and Dead Mans Curve by Jan and Dean. That video of Deadmans Curve was pretty lame but it did show the E-type..........

I remember hearing about it the day it happened. Terrible crash. Jan passed in 2004. Here is a memorial to him.

Very simplistic rhythms. I had never heard of them. Are they from Sweden? I loved it when the guy picked up the bass fiddle and played it like a bass guitar. As heard on Monty Python, "and now for something completely different".

Love the Ventures and the "Surf Guitar."

I must have missed something though. I thought the ONLY kind of music WAS "surf music." You mean to tell me there are other kinds of music? :( Who'd-a Thunk? ;)
