They turned a lovely shade of gray by the end of Summer, and for some strange reason, Mom would replace them with new ones. "Clothesline" meant just that. Trash was hauled to the dump. Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition was launched. Baseball Cards were from Topps, and a nickel a pack, with oh-so-cardboardy bubble gum. MiniSkirts were replaced by Maxis about same time Shag hairstyles replaced Beehives. Hot Pants. Halter Tops. Both worn by those who would, could and should. Mercedes Benz was the car. Reel-to-Reel. Lawn Darts. Knick-Knacks. Mood Rings. Paddleball, Balsa Airplanes, Paratroopers, Jacks, Marbles (see below), ArmyMen were on rotating display, which squeaked. Marbles. Toy guns looked like the real thing. Mostly. Your Man From U.N.C.L.E. radio turned into a Machine Gun. If you had Silly Putty and a Slinky, not only were you entertained, so was your friend. God...I miss my youth ... Life is good now, but my fondest memories are from grammar school... I remember going with my dad to Walgreens to buy "tubes" for our TV... I remember my 1st radio...hand held... ran on a 9v battery... Running to the corner drug store to buy a kite, or a plastic sword, or baseball cards... Later... I remember going to the cool kids house to watch cable. And my dad pointing out that they were morons to pay for tv service... I do remember getting milk on the doorstep, in a glass container... Going to the shoe store with your parents and a 50 something guy in a shirt and tie would get out the big metal foot sizer. Going to Sears with my parents and our old TV tubes to check them in the tube testing machine. Getting a hamburger, fries and a coke from MacDonalds and getting change back from a $1.00 bill. They actually had a commercial about this. The $1.00 bill........(here in Canada anyways). The $2.00 bill......(ditto). Having my dad give me 50 cents and a gallon gas can and saying, go to the station, buy a gallon of gas for the lawnmower and keep the change. When the cops caught me speeding and they all looked under the hood of my car, were suitably impressed, and then let me go.
