A racing career that began late in life led him to be one of the drivers of the BMW Junior Team and to participate in DRM races with a BMW Gr.5. His F1 debut took place in the Italian Grand Prix at Imola in 1980, after which he would compete in 56 Grands Prix driving Arrows, ATS, Brabham and RAM. If the F1 races did not satisfy him, he sought a revival in other touring car and prototype sport races, driving cars such as the BMW M1, Porsche 935J, Ford Capri Turbo, Ford C100 and BMW 635 Csi. Many will remember him for his accident at the Fugplatz at the Nurburgring during an F2 race when his single-seater literally took off, flipping over several times before crashing into the barriers. Unfortunately, he had no better luck in Toronto in 1985 when he went off the track in his Porsche, (which he shared with Marc Surer), returned to the track after a long repair, crashed into a protective wall.and succumbed to injuries.
