Remembering Swedish star Ronnie Peterson, who died #OnThisDay 11 September 1978, following a start-line crash at Monza that caused broken legs. Peterson’s injuries were not immediately deemed life-threatening, but a surgery complication caused a bone marrow embolism, leading to his death the following day.
Nicknamed the “SuperSwede,” Peterson was regarded as one of the fastest drivers of his era, winning 10 Grands Prix and thrilling fans with his aggressive style. Twice a championship runner-up, his loss at just 34 years old left a huge mark on the sport.
